Just wondering why it seems so limited. The tuning rods are not able to screw in nearly as far as modern kits. They heads seem to get tight realy fast, if you know what I mean. Is there something wrong with my toms or are they all like that?

I'm gonna level with you ...
I currently run three Slingerland kits. Every one of them has a huge tuning range; from low, deep, and warm all the way up to high, tight, and warm. I'm thinking there's some variables not being addressed. head choice, drum tensioning experience, kit histories, etc. It might be your kit, but the assumption has to be that you took to the time to check edges and such. I doubt it's the build.

If your shells are out of round the heads will fit tight and the tuning range will disappear the worse that gets.
