Something thin enough to resonate. BTW, I've recorded albums with a 28" bass drum, studio and live albums. They didn't have great low end.

Did you ever use one as a woofer

have you tried using a sub kick? You can easily make one out of a small speaker and some wires and they are very effective at giving more bottom end and much smaller than using a bass drum. The signal you get is huge so you only need a little bit in the mix.

I used a 26x10 stainless steel and the heads I used were just 1 ply smooth heads. Came out well

I've not used a big bass drum for a woofer, just as a bass drum.

What exactly do you mean as a "woofer?"

You basically set up another shell in front of your bass to act as a sympathetic resonator to increase low-end BOOOOWOOWWWWOWWWWOWW (highly technical terminology, I know). I've seen them just set there, or held on with floor tom leg mounts and straight rods, or whatever.

Basically, you mic it up separate in the mix from your pleasantly tamed & muffled bass and dial in the amount & duration of deep fundamental tone that tickles your fancy.

I have a 10x28 ludwig and used it as a woofer in the studio. sounded great. it has the original heads which are those smooth whites. I guess regular coated ambassadors will do the work.
