1985 Ludwig Transition Badge Snare?? Help ! Last viewed: 2 days ago

Hi everyone !

Brand new to the forum. Bought a used Pearl Rhythm Traveller kit off Craigslist to start learning drums ( I am a guitarist ) and the seller had an upgraded snare instead of the standard Pearl Rhythm Traveller snare. It is a Ludwig, and my initial research dates this to 1985 because of the badge on the snare. This is the only marking of Ludwig on the snare other than the throw. No other markings or serial numbers. Am I right? That this is a 1985Ludwig snare? Is his maple? How much is a snare like this worth? Thanks for your help! Trying to figure out how to add photos

ludwig did have some transitional badges in 84-85. they were large keystone badges like yours but had chicago on them instead of monroe. some of those had no serial numbers. these were the last drums to come out of the chicago plant.

Thanks for the info. Yes, it is hard to see on the photo, but my badge definitely says Ludwig Drum Co. and then Chicago USA underneath.

It is a 14 X5.

Mike, any idea of how much a snare like this is worth?

others can chime in here because this is not my strongest era of ludwig knowledge at all. in fact, the badge around then is about all i know! for some reason, there hasnt been a larger value placed on these drums because of the transition period. down the road, there may be as they get older. i do know some collectors are buying and keeping these drums with the transional badges however.

its easily worth a couple hundred bucks and maybe more depending on exactly what it is.

That's a Jazz Festival (5 x 14 and 8 bowtie lugs) although I'm not sure if they were still calling it that in those years. The 2 hole (for snare stings) blackface P85 strainer dates from around 1980-83 according to The Ludwig Book so that fits in with the last of the Chicago badges. At least as accurately as any Ludwig chronology does.

My first Ludwig kit was a microkit (10/12FT/16) made from shells of the same period and some had those badges. They are 6 ply all Maple shells. A different formulation from the classic 3 ply shells of earlier times.

Drums from that period haven't yet become collectable. They are still a great drum for the money in my book. However, I'd go with vintagemore2000 on a value: $200 - $250 and you might sell it promptly. Hold out for more and it might take much longer to sell.

I'm not sure what the two extra holes (filled with screws) on the butt panel are about. It almost looks as if the shell might have been turned over and those were originally for the butt to go on the other side. Odd.

mlayton, vintagemore200 and zenstat, thank-you so much for the help! Now I know exactly what my snare is. As I said, the guy I bought the kit from said that it was a pretty cool snare, I knew the Ludwig brand from the 70's, but I had no idea how much this snare was worth. You guys know your stuff !! Thanks again guys !!!
