1970s Ludwig Lug and Tom Mystery Last viewed: 1 minute ago

Hello. First time posting here. I have a Ludwig mystery I'm trying to solve. It involves two mounted toms (12" x 15" and 14" x 16"). These are traditional double-headed toms that feature Maple Cortex wrap and Granitone (Lud-Cote) interiors with re-rings. The serial numbers date these drums to 1976, according to Ludwig's serial number guide. However, I can't seem to find any corresponding lugs that match what are on these toms. Unlike the "Classic" lugs, these are open at the bottom and otherwise smooth without ridges. Additionally, I can find no reference to the 14" x 16" hanging tom in any Ludwig catalogs of the time. The option for a large, mounted tom stops with the 12" x 15." Any Ludwig afficianados that might shed some light here?

Could you post pictures that show the entire drum?

Sounds like they started life as single headed concert toms and someone converted them to double headed. They didn't have access to Ludwig Classic lugs so they used whatever those lugs are to do the conversion. The single headed concert tom shells had bearing edges cut on top and bottom so all that was required was to drill new holes for the bottom lugs and install the new lugs.

FYI, your serials are approx. '73.  The serial guide on Ludwig's site inaccurately assigns too many serial numbers to '76.

Thanks for the input here. I figured these drums were made before 1976, so thank you for confirming. I'm adding some more photos of the drums for examination. It's plausible that someone converted these from concert toms to double-headed toms. It's weird to me, though, to remove the original batter side lugs instead of leaving them. Oh well. I plan to sell these for a friend, who is not the original owner, and these two drums stumped me. I wanted to be sure what I have here.
