1966 STAR Diamond Solo outfit input

I have a line on a Star kit. Actually never heard of Star before this; but know it's MIJ.

What are these valued at? Is there even much interest in them?

Thanks - Hobbs

Well, from what I can see, I'd say that you're not going to find a more complete vintage MIJ set than this. Looks like everything is there, original stands and cymbals, and most importantly, the original reso hoops and mounting hardware for the toms. So the real value in this set is in its completeness (is that a word??)

However, blue sparkle is probably the most common wrap, so there isn't a lot of value there, even though it looks like it's probably in good shape (I'm guessing that the fading we see was created by the camera flash.)

So all in all, you might be looking at around $250 for this set, and I think that's about as high as it would reasonably go, unless someone had an emotional/nostalgic connection with this particular set, which could be the case for some buyer out there.

My thinking is that if you're interested in getting yourself into a nice player MIJ set, this would be a good way to go as you might be able to snag this set up for $200 or possibly even less. But if you're interested in a quick flip, you probably aren't going to see the profit for your time/investment that you would like, and should probably pass on this and let it go to a player.

Pretty much agree with cn679. If the price were right though, I would scoop them up if I were closer. Star changed name to TAMA in the 70s. Could those be Ludwig 1400 cymbal stands???

Am I the only one seeing the drums don't match? The 12" has the "Made in Japan"round blue badge-It is possible/probable they are all Star drums, but not a set.Two totally different shades of blue sparkle.Yes? No?

I'll speculate further by proposing the double mount drums are a replacement for a single 12"or 13",and the snare purchased at the same time.Elementary.....

Looks like Zim-gar badges to me.

yeah I agree about the tom mount. Look at the Cymbal arm, would it be there if that was a factory tom mount? Plus is the tom mount in the wrong place all together?

The difference in the shade of Blue Sparkle could just be lighting. Also those old Blue Sparkle wraps start seeming darker the more dirty they get, I've always been surprised how many drummers who had Blue Sparkle sets and never clean the shells because "It hides dirt really well"

The 13" tom and the floor tom looks like the badge is missing all together. So the only difference I see is the Kick and the 12" tom.

Good morning all -

First: thank you for all the kind responses, as usual.

I looked up "Star drums catalog" & found a 1966 Diamond Solo Outfit that looks very much like this kit, minus stands, etc .... The pic shows the queer cymbal holder included w/ the twin toms - so I think it is original.

http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/japanese_drums/catalog_star.html.

About the only thing tempting me here, because I will only flip the kit to buy top-end vintage, are the stands {Ludwig?} & cymbals {Zildjian? - doubt it}.

I will advise the lady who contacted me pretty much what cn679 said. She was going to put it up on CL for 300, a price I agree is just right for someone to set his child up with.

Best! Hobbs
