1963 Ludwig Tom mount position? Last viewed: 3 days ago

Loading...

Hey gang, I found a 1963, 22in Ludwig bass drum at a garage sale but the Tom mount is in between the lugs and not 'straddling' a single lug like I am accustomed to seeing. Do you guys think this is fake, remounted, a different model, or OK? Thanks!

Here is a pic of my '63 Super Classic that I used to own...not in the same spot as the one you posted. Maybe this one was a Traveler or Combo outfit? I can't speak of the positioning on those. Is there a floor tom?

Also, you want to note that the upper mount on the one you posted is from a late 60's/early 70's kit. To be honest, those work a lot better than the "telephone dial" ones, but that piece is definitely not from 1963.

Thanks, good to know on the Tom mount. This is my first vintage kit that I plan to play but also restore someday. I was curious if the combo or other models put the Tom rail in a different spot. Yes on the floor Tom. Thx

Are there any other holes in the bass drum where a mount may have gone? My rail mount on my original 1958 Ludwig 14"x22" bass is in the same place "evenly between the lugs" except a little closer to the batter side. It's like even with the lugs.

Rail mounts can be in any one of several locations to the drummer's preference. it was very common for the rail mount to be installed at the music store after the virgin bass drum was received from the drum company. I have seen and owned drums with the rail in the two locations detailed here as well as in the middle of the shell. Some are installed closer to the batter hoop, and others are more to the center of the shell. I have no idea if there was a left hand and a right hand default location that Ludwig used. I don't think that there was a "usual" location.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
