1962 Ludwig BDP tom Last viewed: 21 hours ago

A local guy has some drums for sale. Among them is a 12 x 8 BDP tom from 1962. I haven't seen it in person, but the photo shows a missing bottom rim and lugs. He wants $75 for it.

What do you think? Should I go for it? Is this a fair price, or if not, what should I ask? I am interested in it because I like old Ludwigs, and this seems like a manageable restoration project for me. Plus, the date stamp is one day off my birthday!

He also has a 24 x 18 red sparkle bass drum for $200

Just my two cents... I am NOT an expert.

If the shell and wrap are in great shape then I think $75 is right in the ball park.

I would look at ebay completed auctions for the cost of a similar complete and nice drum that sold.

Then I would look at the costs of the parts it will take to put this drum together.

Then do the math... if you are with in a range that is tolerable to you why not take on the project?

That's just my method... obviously other people on the forum are much better equipped with the knowledge to make a call like this.. Cool Dude

Not a Guru... just interested..

Why do you want it? Other than its from your birth year, which I understand because I was born in Aug, 1962 and think it would be cool to have a drum set from that year.

Do you have other BDP drums and need the missing peice?

Jim has very good advice, see what the end cost would be and go from there.

Mu gut feeling is, its is worth 75 if the shell and wrap are in good condition.

Chances are, the bottom bearing edge is rather rough. Factor that into your equation.

If you're not trying to build a BDP kit, I'd let it go; even if you are, BDP fades weirdly sometimes--pretty hard to get 3 or 4 drums that look alike. if you want to try a small restoration, I'd go for a snare rather than a tom. Just my 2c.........marko

At 75.00 for the drum it's alittle high because of the missing parts.Nickle finish ludwig parts are somewhat hard to fine. The lugs sell for about 5.00 each on Ebay 30.00 total, add another 15.00 for the 6 T-rods and 20.00-25.00 for the rim total in parts is 65.00 add shipping and add the 75.00 to that total 140.00+ drum..i would wait for a complete drum....Mikey

I'd have to agree on the pass option. A drum from your birth year / day is really cool, but I'd hold out for a birthday snare because at least you can use it regularly. Good luck and let us know which way you decide to go.

I'd say that $75 is tops considering buying 6 lugs w/rods, a rim, head and , probably, a bering edge job. You could be looking at another $100 to restore it completely and I'm assuming that the finish is good all around. I agree that unless you need this to complete a kit, it's not a bargain.

Maybe I'm just sick, but I'd buy it anyway. Orphans are my favorite. If you get it at least it's got a shot at being put with some other like shells, the guy who is selling it, isn't on VDF. Who knows what will happen to it. get that poor orphan out of the wind.
