If the extension lever is broken can you still engage and disengage the snares.

I have been told that it is common for the extension lever to be broken off.

But by the picture below it seems that the throw off is ok..

What am I missing... I checked the catalogue and the picture looks the same

You know Mark I've looked at those clamshell pics dozens of times. I just now noticed the 180* rotation of the arm. I thought it was a 1/4 turn to engage and that sure explains the poor throw off snare rattle. I'll need to re adjust them for proper rotation tomorow. "Light bulb clicks on over head" Thank you! :) This also explains the circular chaffing I've seen on many CS bodys.

To address the op's Q I wonder if the later shorter 5.5 RK snares didn't use the telescopic extension like the early deeper drums? Sure looks like they didn't as it wasn't really needed. Or they fell out and were lost like some ofl the others? Olympic Drums sells the repop extensions. The drum in the EB link looks fine and will function as intended.

Am I missing something here.

The item on EB does have a handle that looks exactly like the handle in the catalogue. Where is the "extension" piece. This picture looks not different than the one that I posted

Ken the EB drum does indeed have the handle. The extension is a smaller piece that slides into the handle. See the link I posted. I'm not sure if the smaller 5.5" RK's had the extension or not. Perhaps the more savy RK guys would know. vintagemore2000 is certainly one of those guys hopefully he'll chime in again. Hang tight and see.

Yes,the extention is just a solid piece of round stock, with a ball on the end, that came with deeper RK,like the 8x14 super Gene Krupa. The 5.5,6.5 and 7" RK's really didn't need the extention.

I think the confusion about the strainer handle, stems from the fact that the butt looks just like the strainer, but without the handle.

Wrong.... with correct internal adjustment, snares are engaged with lever either to left or right (1st pic). Vertical (straight up) lever position disengages the snares.(2nd pic)

Ron that's what I thought too. Are the pics and info drum guide wrong? I have to say rotating the handle 180* does scuff the CS body. But it does allow more room for the snares to drop. LOL I spent Sunday am taking it back apart and adjusting everything for the 180 rotation. I've never had one of these before so it's all uncharted territory for me. But I am good at taking them apart and putting back together!! LoLoLoLo I had mine setup just like yours. Snares would disengage but I'd back off the tension knob a smidge more to eliminate a slight snare rattle.
