1959 Ludwig Snare - Little help? Last viewed: 22 hours ago

Loading...

Hey friends. I have accumulated this 1959 Ludwig snare. The date stamped inside is Feb 18th, 1959. It looks like a 3 ply mahogany 5" x 14" shell - White Marine Pearl wrap - 8 dual insert lugs. It has a WFL buttplate. My question is...what is the appropriate throw for this...a P83 or a Classic. And is this a Classic or a Jazz Festival? Thanks for the help.

I'm thinking Classic...

I think I still have a chrome strainer...but is missing the arm...

I agree with Blair. I think I may have a full WFL Classic throw and butt plate. Not sure if they all had the same sizing as far as how tall they were.

Hi, the WFL strainer is period correct to this drum, but I'm not sure if it's the p87 classic or the p83. I think the hole spacing suggests p83, but hard to tell from the photo. It looks like the Buddy Rich WFL Super Classic which had the classic strainer. Hard to know. Best to measure the hole spacing. I don't know the exact measurements, but the p83 should have a larger hole spacing than the p87 classic. I'm sure some Ludwig guys here could tell you for sure. Good look sourcing the parts. Helluva nice drum! :)

Thanks everyone. The original holes were 1 3/8" apart. Someone drilled another set for a different throw at some point. So it looks looks a WFL Classic is the best fit. Is it a Super Classic at that point or a Buddy Rich Super Classic?

i'd call the transition badge model the buddy rich super classic. 57 catalog calls them that and the 60 catalog has them listed as simply super classics.

there are two different bolt hole patterns that I am aware of on p87's. for some reason, my notes show the wfl model as 1 3/8 and the Ludwig model as 2 inches. just makes ure youre getting the right strainer when you get one.

if you don't have the correct wires, they will be hard to find. they are longer than the wires for a normal 14" drum. they have a center hole on the end to mount to the p87. you can take conventional wires and make you a little rig without much trouble though.

ive got one of these as well and went through much of what you are now. they are nice drums.

here's a before and after of mine. it was worth the work. mine has a 1960 date stamp.
