That is EXCELLENT!I'm going to propose a photo section for VDF to post these type of pix-the Vintage Drummer archive.I have some of my grandfather in the 30's-40's.After all,in many cases, they are why we are here doing what we are doing now.I owe that man so much. His perseverance, along with his friend/mentor/teacher put me on a path that travelled the country.

Great idea! I've got a few, too!

Here's the first batch of closeups. The bass drum is hinged and I've shown it open. No logos inside, just a serial number stamped into the side.

The bass muffler (is that what it's called?) has the Ludwig logo as does the bass foot pedal. The snowshoe cymbal is made of wood with a spring hinge and canvas straps - log logo on the wood or the cymbals themselves.

The original light bulb still works after 80 or 90 years! I'm a lighting designer so that part was very cool for me.

I'll post more photos of the other parts of the kit.

thanks.

Here's a few more photos:

We took a shot through the vent hole on the snare and could see what looks like a white label or paint splotch, but can't read anything. It does have a serial number though. The cymbal has a name on the bottom that I read as Ajaba maybe with an X and another symbol that I don't recognize.

thanks once again for your help.

What a cool old pic!One heck of a sax collection there, including a monster bass saxophone....and at least in this photo, Earl appears to have a xylophone (a Deagan 844 to be specific) instead of a marimba. Any idea if that instrument is still in the family?

You are probably correct about the xylophone. I remember my Brother in Law having a marimba that I was told belonged to Earl and I mistook the instrument in the photo for that. Unfortunately both instruments appear to be long gone and no one in the family knows where they ended up.

thanks.

Ajaha. Here's some info on Ajaha from Wikipedia, which seems to match what I've read elsewhere.

WOW!! What a great find. It should all be in a museum! I would have loved to hear that band play. Bassoon, violins, banjo, saxophones galore, a cute`vocalist, and of course those cool drums!! You are`very lucky to have that as part of your family history.

An idea for you. If you decide to part with the kit make sure you take a photo of yourself with that kit and keep it with those original photos in the family archives. 50 years from now someone in your future family will appreciate you and what you have done to preserve your families history.

SkyDog - Thanks for the information - the cymbal is definitely Ajaha. The snowshoe cymbals have no markings at all that I can find - maybe they were ink only and have worn off over time.

Hello again.

I wondered if anyone ever figured out who might have made this kit? the cymbal has been identified as Ajaha, the bass pedal is ludwig, but other than that - no clue. I had guessed it was from the 20's but with the snowshoe cymbals instead of high hat, which I think came about in the 20's, maybe it's older?

Also, does anybody have an idea what this kit might be worth?

thanks to all.

Yes, as I already stated, it's a Wallberg & Auge drum set. The bass drum model is called a "Perfection" and is hinged.
