100+ Yr Old Gretsch (20th Century) Snare?? What is this? Last viewed: 22 hours ago

Loading...

I know very little about drums but had this old snare kicking around our guitar shop for the last 20 years. I figured it was about time to get some more info on it. Soon after acquiring it, we sent to to a drum shop in NYC to have new skin heads and gut snare put on it. Based on this forum's sister-site (it appears) the earliest 20th Century Drum badge I saw was the metal oval one from the 1920's. And it appears Gretsch started making instruments in the 1880's. That's still almost a 40 year window!! So where would this drum fall into that timeline?? Any idea? Also..... any idea of what it might be worth?

They still used the snare and trumpet in Forts and maybe training but the drum was off the Battlefield by this drums timeline. While they were breaking away from the musket to the cartridge, they were breaking away from rope tension too.

If it`s Military, then many were made. If it`s school, then many were made.

16 rods make it tight and loud. There`s not much to compare it to for an evaluation.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

I have a 20th Centurey badged Gretsch snare drum. Fred Gretsch told me mine is in the 1912 Catalog.

Nice drum you have there.

Mine has different lugs as you can see -here it is

Thanks Kona! Nice drum you have as well! Yours is the oval badge I was referring to. And if it's from the 1912 catalog, how much earlier did they make these square plastic (celluloid?) badges? Could this drum be from the 1800's?

I had a Wilson Brothers snare drum made in 1926 with the large headed t-rods like your drum.
