1929 Ludwig&Ludwig SuperSensitive w/inlay
3 Attachment(s)
All original down to every screw, washer, and calf heads, which are off the drum. I can only theorize this Drum was a special order for the original owner, A.S.M., which is etched on one panel. The only other similar example I have seen is in the Currotto Collection. This is a single ply mahogany shell w/re-rings and is 5x14. This cleaned up so well, I was stunned! Enjoy! It could be a one of a kind!

Re: 1929 Ludwig&Ludwig SuperSensitive w/inlay
Currently, I am researching any possible ties to the initials A.S.M. or R.S.M. on the shell(it could be either).
I have my "The Ludwig Book" by Rob Cook handy and have determined possible artists from this era to be: A.S.M: Avis McDonald - 1928-32 R.S.M.: Ray Mann - 1932-33 Ray McKinley - 1948-63 (no, couldn't be, could it?) Reef McGarvey - 1941 Raymand Munroe - 1926-1930 If by some dumb luck, anyone might be able to shed some light for me, by all means, please send me a PM! Excited |

That drum brings me back to the very early days of interest in the resurgence of vintage drums and a lot of the items that showed up in the Not So Modern Drummer publication that was initially a paper mailer. I've never seen one like that though. You've got a very rare piece there. Probably a great sounding drum too.

Wow what a cool snare! You sure have some nice gems. Mahogany must sound nice and warm. Do you have a picture of the "ASM" panel. Would be cool to see how they etched them in. Congrats on the amazing find here.

Re: 1929 Ludwig&Ludwig SuperSensitive w/inlay
I finally was contacted by the owner two owners back. He bought the Drum from John Aldridge! Told me it was in one of his books. Can anyone confirm this for me? I have contacted John via email, no response yet. I also ordered his Guide to Vintage drums to see if it's in there. John had told him he got the drum from the band leader of Sammy Davis Jr.!
MAN! If I can just confirm this information.Help2 |
Re: 1929 Ludwig&Ludwig SuperSensitive w/inlay
Sure enough, this drum is on Page 164 of John Aldridge's "Guide to Vintage Drums". I was told he owned this drum some 12+ years ago, so I have contacted him and am waiting for his reply.
My search into this drum's history continues.....Coffee Break2 |
