Gretsch Max Roach bottom snare hoop question

1 Attachment(s)
Hi Gang,

I'm looking for a bottom hoop for my Max Roach snare. The one that is on it is a top hoop that someone drilled holes in to accommodate snare strings (I know...what?). I've seen some low-profile ones on eBay with the slots, but came across this one the other day. I've not seen a bottom hoop like this and wondered if you have any info about it.

Thanks for any assistance!
Cheers,
Rick

Hi Rick!

It's definitely a Gretsch hoop! Here's a link to a snare drum on eBay with the same hoop. Personally, I think it's an odd way to route the snare wires/strap, but that's what Gretsch was using.

That hoop was definitely NOT used with the Max Roach snare drum. This hoop only worked with their lever strainer, the Microsensitive strainer and THAT hoop simply will not work on the 4" Gretsch model snares. The max Roach uses the shorter version of the Microsensitive, and even that comes very close to the batter's hoop, those "gates" will stick out too far and the Micro will hit it. That hoop was for earlier and some different models than the Max Roach.

Though it is a Gretsch hoop.

I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

I think you are correct about this. I was only focused on the hoop being a Gretsch and forgot to consider the drum it was being used on.

Thanks Guys! I'll stick with the low-profile slotted hoop then. Also, do you know if the Micro-Sensitive reproductions will work with the 4 x 14?

That hoop is for a drum with gut or wire wrapped silk snares. They would bend up from the snare head and wrap around the bearing edge/snare bed. The slot was invented for wire snares with cord, or extended snares like the Radio King or Ludwig Super.
