So what do you guys think... Last viewed: 1 minute ago

I have 10 Sound King lugs sitting around that are in pretty sad shape. Some scraped down to the bare metal under the chrome. I also have a late 50s Radio King in Red Sparkle that is about to be unseated as my main player.

I plan on taking those aforementioned lugs, sand them to the bare metal, and paint them black. Buy a set of black die cast rims and throw them and those lugs onto the Radio King. Black on red c'mon that will look pretty cool

Now here is my conundrum. If I ever decide to sell the drum I can put the original lugs and stick savers back on the drum like nothing ever happened. However since everything on the drum will be black, I am contemplating also taking the clamshell strainer off and painting it black to match the rest of the hardware.

So what do you think...

Should I deal with the strainer being chrome to preserve its originality if I ever decide to sell said drum?

Should I go all out and paint the strainer as well?

Should I be shot on sight for mentioning painting stuff in the first place?

OR lastly... do any of you have a clamshell and clamshell butt end that is rusted up but functional that I could paint up. Then I could cover all bases, everything matched up color wise, and originality if I ever decide to sell it.

I'm not the biggest stickler for originality around here, but even I'll tell you not to paint a perfectly good clamshell. Even if we look past the molesting of a vintage drum part, it'll probably look bad after a while since paint usually doesn't adhere too well to chrome, especially on moving parts.

I am a purist, leave the Clamshell strainer and butt end stock, no one's gone to see it but you, it's behind the kit! the lugs will only hold the paint for a month or so, so it will look like a kid or rookie did it! just sell the drum and get a black one,or leave it be!

I plan on sanding all the chrome off the lugs being that chrome does have the adherence issues. What exactly is the metal under the chrome on those Sound King lugs? Like I said the lugs aren't being used anyways and I'm not touching anything on the shell, so if I do ever decide to sell it I can put the original lugs back on.

side note. I have had luck in the past painting chrome bass drum claws on an old MIJ kit. Scuff it up then use white appliance epoxy as a base coat. Never had an issue with flaking

that would probably work, don't do it to the clamshell and butt end, they are rare and hard to find and expensive!

there ya go that was the info I needed. Never knew they were that expensive. I'd still be willing to paint one that is rusted to oblivion tho

Well, I knew a guy that had one of those weird Rogers strainers re-chromed. Only cost him about $25 as well. Don't paint it, just clean it and leave it be. I painted some cheap knock off lugs on a modern POS Legion kit not long ago. They were pitted. I used a wire wheel on a grinder to remove the chrome and it seemed to do fine. The paint didn't flake off anyway...

Find another strainer and butt plate with the same mounting hole spacing..

You may even get lucky and find them already in black..

Also a very good idea, anyone know off the top of their heads if there is a strainer out there that has the same hole spacing?

Same hole size & spacing as a clamshell? Good luck with that search! I've attached a pic of the clamshell's hole pattern.

If you're going to replace the strainer with a different type, I'd suggest fabricating an adapter plate. You'll have a whole lot more strainer options that way.
