Theres a 5 piece slingy kit at a pawn shop here in my town. Its a hollywood kit with about a 8x14 metal snare. It comes with all the hardware and zildjian cymbals. He's asking $1,000 for them. Are they worth it? They look like 3 ply shells without re rings. They have a silver and black badge and serial numbers, but doesnt say where they were built.

I looked at a vintage drum site, http://vintagedrumguide.com/slingerland.html,and it said the three ply shells which were maple /poplar and either maple or mahogany, possibly two badges used one silver and black, one year 1986,no raised lettering, and a much more common black and gold badge, they could be the spirit line, which I guess may be a less expensive line, less labor with no re rings, same shell as used on pro line drums though.I think that unless the cymbals are paiste 602,s or something like that the kit is a bit overpriced for sure, even if they had period zil A's I think 700.00 tops, otherwise I would think 300.00 to 600.00 depending on condition and cymbals.80's slings are not bringing a lot of money, and these are a lower line set,but might be really nice at the right price.
Oops looked at your original post, the black and white badge had serial #s,you might have a later version that had luan shells that I remember from the early 90's that were import taiwanese type things,In that case they sound way overpriced.
Silver\Black w\serial #'s and thin 3-ply shells of good wood puts 'em early 80's methinks. Those thin shells weren't imported as understand it. What are the #'s ? - that'll tell a lot. Assuming cymbals means three (ride & crash & hats) and hardware means Slingy pedal & 'hat stand & snare stand - there's $400 of stuff right there - so it's not a terrible asking price for a pawn shop. Bet they'd take $875 & that'd be a pretty good deal. Gotta agree that these aren't a finer example of Slingy - the company's trajectory was irreversibly downhill by then - BUT they are far better than the lousy thick poplar-shelled versions or the imported shell versions. http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/drcjw/article_3_shells11.html
I have 3 different Taiwan made Slingerland snares from the 90's.. One is the Maple/Mahogany 3 ply... one's copper, and one's brass. As far as sound, they sound very good. Value?? I got 110$ for a steel 5.5x14 Steel Slingerland snare.. also a taiwan. If you are buying them to collect, not that valuable... to play, they are respectable. Better than Luan.
Those badges are late 80s to early 90s Artist Custom and Spirit line drums from the HSS era. They sound good. But, the question was about worth. Are these worth the 1000 dollars? Unless the cymbals and hardware are worth 650, they really are not. Those drums are Taiwan and Korean, depending on the line. The Artist Custom line was a higher line, but it's still not worth much for resell. The Spirit line is worth much much less. We've had this discussion on a different thread where a user wanted to sell his kit and found out about the worth of these Asian shells. Yes, they sound good. No, they don't hold much value. It is what it is. Ultimately, they are worth what someone will pay for them. Hence the ridiculously large sum for that Ludwig snare in yet another thread. It is what it is.
I paid $300 for this kit shell pack with metal snare. Seemed like a good deal to me. Spirit line HSS era. Sounds really good and I don't think the shells are luan. the wood grain is too fine for that, no re-ring. 1990?
