I'm looking for examples of 1920s-early 30s painted bass drum heads. Anything from catalogs, online pics, personal stuff, etc.
I'm curious as to what was done in that time line,... the styles, colors, designs of the period.

I don't have anything that old, but seeing your topic and the "cool" icon I immediately thought of this...I acquired some used drum heads years ago, and among them were a 20" plastic and 22" calfskin that were both hand-painted with the logo you see below (picture is the calf head). Probably from the early 1960's period. It appears to be tempera paint, and if I read my "pictographs" correctly I think it stands for "Joe Cool" but I can't be certain.

Hi,Your best way is to fine an old ludwig,slingerland drum catalogs from the 20s-30s,if i recall right ludwig used 6 types of front painted drum heads.. i have the catalogs but it will take me sometime to get them out,they were part of the biggest drum deal i just did....Mikey

Yes, I've not the resources to obtain any old catalogs from that era,... at least I have not run into any thus far.
I see them on ebay from time to time, but from other eras and the asking prices are a bit zany.
I'd appreciate any and all info and assistance you may be able to provide! Always happy to learn more about history!!Help2

I was actually thinking of doing a sunset painting of some type since the Leedy bass drum I have originally had two very small, Christmas tree light-sized red bulbs inside the body of the drum.
This way, the general idea is, that when lit up, it would enhance the look of the "sunset" scene... or so at least that's one idea Iv'e had....

Hi, When you do this just make sure you fine a very good artist to paint the head for you,i used to have one that did the heads for me,cost was 100.00 for the painting,i had the head..I only wish that i got more done by them,they passed away about 4 years ago..Mikey
