Evans Retro Screen equivalent Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

I just picked up an early 70's Slingerland kit and I am in the process of getting new heads for it. I've always liked the sound of a kick drum without a resonant head and have used Evans Retro Screens on the front of my kick for many years now. It appears that these days Evans only manufactures the Retro Screen in the 22" size... I am looking for 20". With that being the case, does anybody know of an equivalent product? I've been searching Google and nothing comes up. Perhaps there may be an alternative... I want to have SOMETHING on the front of my kick drum so that I can keep all the associated hardware with the drum. I am also worried about the kick going out of round. Any suggestions would be a great help!

I used to cut a big hole in the reso side. Wanted to keep the logo but wanted the sound of no head.

Yeah, I think that is the route I am going to go. In the mean time, I sent Evans an e-mail asking them what happened to the Retro Screen. Hopefully I hear back from them. I hate it when companies stop making the things I love... But then again this is the same thing that brought to the world of vintage drums.

The Evans Retro Screen is essentially a screen with a hoop. I like the sound of no resonant head. The Retro Screen served to give me that sound AND allow me to keep the kick drum's front hoop and hardware on the kit (thus helping me keep the shell in the round). I am open to suggestions. :)

I just got an e-mail back from the Evans folks stating the following:

"Thank you for your interest in Evans. Yes we only make the Retro in a

22" and no plans at this time for a 20"."

Too bad.

I was just checking and found that even Hart Kontrol Screen Mesh Heads come in every size except the 20. (6,8,10,12,13,14,15,16,18,22,24) Now isn't that stupid!!! What the heck? Oh well...

Here's a dealer that carries a mesh practice head. Check it out if you wish.
