What did I find this time...WFL 24" Duco bass drum

Loading...

Hi gang, been a while since I posted but Im still lurking :)

Over the weekend I picked up a 24x14 Gold/Black Duco finish WFL Badge (no SN#) bass drum.

All original hardware and heads!

Single tensions nickle over brass/steel hardware, single ply shell with re-rings.

I think Im the first person to ever take the heads off, and they are 100% usable!

The shell is solid with no cracks, or extra holes...well....there are no holes at all in it except for the grommet and the tension rod support lug in the center.

Typical Duco flaking finish, but it has gold sparkle wrap on the hoops that is gorgeous!

From what i can tell it looks like a bass drum from a 49' De Luxe Combo Drum outfit.

I've got it torn down for clean up now but will snap pics tonight.

Anyone have some clamp on spurs for this baby?

forgot to add, the lugs are bowtie style NOB with no inserts, the tension rods pass through them

Neat drum. Bet it sounds fantastic. I actually like the single tension on those with the calf. Some convert them to separate tension like the Club Date model. Should be able to find a matching snare and or ride tom if desired. Nice find!

thank ya!

It does sound great and modern heads fit like a glove so I can save the original calf's

Add a matching snare and it's a great small gig kit! Great sounding drums. I look at it and wonder where it was played and what kind of music it was used for. Nice find.

That's 3-ply baby! The shells on those drums can sing if you tune em right. I always like to hear a low musical note come out of a bass drum not a dead thud. 3-ply drums can produce a wonderful tone considering how light they are weight-wise.

Enjoy, nice drum.

Shells from that era at Ludwig were 3-ply lay-ups. They were either; maple/poplar/maple, mahogany/poplar/mahogany, or maple/poplar/mahogany. Mike Layton will correct me if I'm wrong, or left something out, but WFL from that era are all 3-ply shells. Some got paint, some got wrapped.
