He was definitely way ahead of the curve (and Hal Blaine) on the concert tom fad. He'd been using a single headed toms since the 50's.
There are three drums in his pictured set you don't see often in the RB era: 12 x 20 BD; 18 x 14 Single Head FT; 12 x 14 Single Head FT.
I read in an interview his fondness for single head toms came early in his career from wearing out/breaking the batter heads. He removed them and put the reso heads on top because he couldn't afford to replace them.
