My vintage Pearl Presidents that i bought and sold 2 years ago had a pretty unique smell as well.. Very antique shop, furniture smell.. I actually enjoyed it. ;)
Ah yes! I love smelling old drums. Old anything for that matter. The inside of old record albums. An old public library. An old wooden roller coaster (the grease!)... :)
From a marketing standpoint,it's one of the few angles drum companies haven't tried yet.Imagine cherry, cedar or pine laminates as a selling point.
I recall one of The Raspberries albums was a scratch-and-sniff...
I like it!

Just doing the math, these must have been brand new when you put them away 35-40 years ago. No wonder they still had that smell!
I just grabbed a Big R kit last week that I'm putting back together, so I had the enjoyment of sniffing that Rogers smell. I couldn't really tell the difference between the smell of the flat grey 5 plies and the white speckled grey of the 9/72s :)

Yes, I bought them in 1976, right after I got my first job that paid real money. I played them for about a year or two and then life started interfering.
I've posted a description and a couple of photos here:

Yes, I've owned both and they each had the same smell. I don't think it's a simple matter of the speckled paint vs. flat. I suspect it's a combination of things which I think may be unique to Rogers.
I know that smell! But lament with me. I bought a great double bass set of Rogers script gray pearl finish in 1976 with original grey painted interiors. (2)-14x24 bass, 9x13, 10x14, 16x16, 16x18, 6.5x14 Snare with center tom stand and all Rogers hardware. I could smell that freshness every time I took them out of the soft cases they came with, and when I changed a head
Played them for 2 years, but felt the 24" basses & toms sounded too deep. Sold them in 1978 for a modest profit, after ordering a new set of Ludwig maple 7 ply's w/single 22" bass. If someone still owns those Rogers I am certain they are happy about that!
