New to me old Ludwig NOB - and some questions Last viewed: 13 hours ago

Loading...

Hello everyone! I wanted to share a few pics of my most recent acquisition...and ask for some Help2 with a few things.

The first photo shows the drum as I received it, complete with a modern head slapped right over the flesh hoop of what had been a calfskin head, and what looked like soda that someone spilled on it a long time ago in several places. That was not easy to clean off. The second photo shows the cleaned up shell, lugs, and batter hoop. It has some small scratches and dents, and a few very small areas of nickel loss, but I'm quite pleased. I've wanted a "Ludwig TRADE MARK" stamped brass snare for a while.

Can anyone give me a closer date range than what I suspect to be "early 20s?" I only see drums like this in the 1923 and 1924 Ludwig snare drum catalog scans on Vintage Drum Guide (see http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/other_stuff/bill_ludwigiii/ludwig_1923_3.jpg and http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/ludwig_snaredrums/1924-ludwig-snare-drums-3.jpg). VDG does not have scans for 1920-22. I don't see any drums like this in the 1919 or earlier catalogs. VDG does not have the 1925 catalog, and I don't see this drum in the 1926 or later catalogs.

Does anyone have a heater that would have been installed in the holes seen in my 3rd photo? It does not have to be in working condition, I'd just like to put one back for nostalgia's sake since the holes are already there.

As can be seen, the 338 strainer is missing some parts. Does anyone have the parts that I need to complete it? Does anyone have the correct resonant side hoop? Of the 8 hoop clips that are present, 7 are cracked. I have some spares, but not enough. Does anyone have 10 or 12 I could buy? Lastly, does anyone have the correct (nickel-plated) tension rods (see last photo)? I have 8 that are fairly rusty...need 16 total.

I'm not in a big hurry for these parts, as my budget is tight - and was blown by the purchase of this drum - and I have a plan to get the drum in playing condition with the purchase of a P80 strainer (tabs spread as suggested by Mr. Curotto in another post) and die cast hoops. However, please do let me know if you have any of these parts to spare. After I sell a few things, maybe I'll be able to afford the parts. :p

Thanks!

Lynn

I was so close to buying this drum. It looked like a fantastic project. Then I thought to myself....I already have one just like it. Let someone else enjoy it. So glad that it ended up in good hands. You're gonna love this one.

Thanks Mike! And thanks for passing on it. Bowing As a matter of fact, I was in the process of passing it off (texting) to a forum member friend when my wife gave me the go-ahead to pull the trigger. It's definitely a nice project. It cleaned up nicer than I expected and the nickel really shines. As I said, I've been wanting one for a while. I ordered a P80 this morning, so I'll be able to use it soon (with the P80 and die cast hoops)...and I can't wait! That will keep me satisfied until I can find the original parts I need.

Also, Mike - or anyone, can you verify that my estimated date range is correct...and possibly narrow that range? I'm thinking it's no earlier than 1920 and no later than 1925, but I can't find catalogs for 1920,21,22 and 25. So, there are 4 years I'm in the dark on.

Thanks,

Lynn

For me, part of the charm of these drums are they just sing with the single flange hoops. Please give them a try before going to the die cast.

I can't narrow the range down any closer. I assumed that it was early 20's. I think any earlier and it would not have the Ludwig name on the shell but have Ludwig & Ludwig on the top hoop.

The modified p80 is a very nice setup. 338 strainers can be hard to find and are costly. They can also break easily. I have a drum that I got from Mike with the modified p80. Love it. They look good on the drum too. I think Mike had this one strainer stripped to nickel. I've used triple flange hoops on mine before. But I do like the single flange best. I use the new replacement clips with these hoops. The original brass clips will break right where they bend over the hoop. The new ones are fine. Some of the earlier (late teen's ) models had steel clips. They hold up good as well.

Here is my 5x14 8 lugger. I made a plate and use a p86 Millenium strainer with it. It has new chrome over brass clips. Here is also the 4x15 6 lug model that I got from Mike. It has the modified strainer and i'm attaching a closeup of it.. I have an earlier 6.5 model that has the original 338 strainer.

Here also is another early 20's 5x14 8 lug modelthat I sold to a friend. Found it locally. Original with calf heads. Easy on the eyes but hard to tune properly with the old clips.

I absolutely love the single flange hoops. The problem is, I only have the top hoop...no bottom. I fully intend to put the single flange hoops on it when I find the correct bottom hoop. I just happened to have a set of 8-lug die cast hoops, so I'll use those until I find the correct bottom.

Beautiful drums, Mike! You have a 6.5" NOB!!! I absolutely love deep snares...especially the NOBs with tube lugs and single flange or no flange hoops.

You also put a thought in my head. There is a plating shop about an hour from me that I may have strip my P80 and redo in nickel...because yours looks quite nice. The problem is this guy doesn't do anything in a hurry and he's pricey...$4 each for 2-1/4" tension rods! Eye Ball

Can you take a picture of the plate you made for the P86? I'd like to see how you did that. I have a P86 still in the bag and considered trying to make a plate for it (it's a great strainer and the look goes well with older drums), but I decided to go with the P80.

I love those big old NOBs. My wife bought me this beautiful Ludwig & Ludgwig for our 25th wedding anniversary a few years ago. It's almost like new.

Beautiful drum Gerald! Looks much like mine. These drums sound amazing!

Lynn-I was thinking that the nickel was underneath the chrome. I have read that items like this can be professionally "dipped" (?) and removes the chrome to show the nickel. I know that many vintage Ludwig chrome parts have nickel underneath.

Don't think I have a handy pic of the plate. It's simple. I used one original hole from the drum to mount the strainer direct(bottom) and made a small piece of metal that attaches to the other original hole on the drum and to the other hole on the strainer. Have them shimmed with small rubber washers as to make no contact with the shell. I did later buy a beautiful bracket off of Ebay that a guy made. Said he only made one though. It had mounts to the drum with proper clearance and then has threaded holes for the p83/85/86 strainer. He had it professionally made and plated even.
