EBay jem or flop?

Loading...

I bid and won on a 8x12 vintage Luddy. I knew ( or so I thought) what I was getting and $30.00 was not that bad to take a chance.

But here lies the rug I can not date this piece.

During the stripping process in the interior beside the black paint the owner put on there was a white pain and I don't think it was prime.

The lug are mini and Nickel not Chrome.

The outer layer, after a good paint removal and sanding is mahogany.

So my assumption is that it is a 1960 to 1964 unit based on Nickel lugs.

it is a 1958 to 1963 based on the white interior paint and is 1961 because of the mahogany outer shell.

What do the expert think?

PS. Sorry about the pic out of focus. My iPhone is on crack sometimes

Are you sure that is nickel?

Tom mount looks after 1965.

Just want to state I am not an expert.

Post a picture of the inside of the tom mount. That will help date the drum.

Nickel was last shown in Ludwig's 64 catalog, but I have owned and seen drums as late as 67 with nickel. Ludwig used the white resacote paint on the interiors up until at least early 68. Mahogany exteriors were used well past the 60's along with maple as well. That particular tom mount was used in mid-late 65 and up. Based on all of that, I'd say probably a 65-66 drum and maybe as late as 67.

Thank you Mike, I tend to agree with you.

One more observation; there were no extra hole in the shell so the tom mount it is the original tom mount, period.

Also I couldn't detect any of the wrap in the scarf of the ply ( The old method of Ludwig forming the shells with the wrap, altogether).

Things I know for sure ;

1) Lugs are mini and nickel

2) Shell had a coat of white paint

3) Interior of shells has no extra holes ( covered or not)

4) Tom mount seems to be the original one since there are no extra holes for different types of mount.

5) Inner ply is Maple outer ply is mahogany.

I will try to buy a badge off eBay once I know for sure the date frame of the shell and find a budget dated accordingly.
