Supra phonic snare blue and olive badge sharp points (not rounded)
Serial number 1011628
Mid 70's
Nevin
Ludwig's serial numbering was quite sporadic in the 70's and they never really had a system from what i, and several members have noticed. I have the same snare drum from around the same year, and i believe mine goes back to probably about 1976, and my serial number is higher than yours, so yours and mine could very well have been made in 1976,78,79 as Ludwig's chart indicates..Another trick i use is to look at and compare the Blue /olive badge's tone color.. Yours and mine both have a faded, lighter tone to their colors, whereas a later one would be a bit brighter and slightly more vivid in their tonal color, but that doesn't always work with certain badges, especially if they're new old stock, and haven't been exposed to smoky bars, or sunlight.. Here's a link to Ludwig's site and serial number chart, and you can find out exactly what year snare was made. Hope this helps you out ;)
You guys are awesome thanks for helping
Ludwig's chart is very inaccurate. It is not based on any sort of inside company knowledge (Ludwig kept no such records) but rather they simply put someone else's chart on their site.
The best serial number dating information comes from Rick Gier's short book on the subject (which is well worth its purchase price, I believe Rebeats has it for sale on their site).
1011628 would likely date from sometime mid 1973-mid 1974 according to Rick's data.
What would you value you something like that at ? It actually has the original soft tan case with the original hieds and the original tuning key on the ring attached. Pretty cool !! We need to sell it
From my sample of n=68 sales
Expected median price = $231.50 Half sell for between $178 and $294.
Much of the variation is down to condition. Some have very nice plating on them, many were poorly plated and have pitting and deterioration to the chrome. Those may sound just as nice, but they don't get the price love.
People may chime in with anecdotal tales of finding them much cheaper, or perhaps paying a bit more. That's all good, but it doesn't really move the expected median price around too much.
Good luck with your sale.
More pics are needed b4 price can be offered...
