Matching Snare vs Non-Matching Snare? Last viewed: 4 minutes ago

Loading...

I have always (for one reason or another, not purposely) had non-matching and usually chrome snare drums.

I have a 60's Slingy BDP set with a chrome Slingy snare and I'm currently building a 60's mahogany kit.

I'm not sure if I should get a BDP snare for the BDP kit and put the chrome snare on the mahogany kit or keep the snare with that BPD kit and get a mahogany snare...or...just get another chrome snare for the mahogany kit.

What are your thoughts on matching snares vs non-matching snares? All this assumes that they sound all similar.

Matching snares are cool. I've never had a matching snare because I mostly use metal snare drums.

I'm planning on making a wood snare drum, but I'll probably wrap it in a somewhat neutral color and use it with multiple kits. I'm thinking black or gray sparkle or glass glitter. Or maybe neon lime sparkle- it's the new black.

I really like my Rogers Tower silver sparkle snare... I play it with my red Ludwigs, my blue Slingerlands, my silver Rogers, my burgundy Tamas.

I don't use it with my Vistalites (Supraphonic) or my satin flame pearl Slingerlands (matching student model Slingy).

I have a matching snare for all my kits but I just really like the Tower.

So that's me... :)

I have one kit that has a matching snare, never use it with the kit, lol. For me It's generally based on what I am doing. Some of my kits are universal and work well for Pop,Rock,Metal,etc.. But some of my snares are very specific. So I personally go by what I'm doing. I do enjoy a cohesive kit look though and you can't go wrong with a metal snare. Always looks good on any kit.

I only have 2 kits. I have a matching wrap wood snare and a COB snares for each. Neither is exact year matching. But it's a nice little choice to have some different sound options when the mood strikes. Matching snares are nice to have for a kit. But either is really fine with me. Each snare is so unique be it wood or metal. I need to buy more snare drums. Yes that's it.

Most of my vintage kits have matching wood-shell snare drums. As most of us know, the majority of kits from the late 60's onward came with metal-shell snare drums, which is why there are so many Supraphonics and Sound King snare drums! In many instances, my metal-shell snares sound better...except for my Rogers wood-shell snare drums! Still, I really do like having a matching snare drum!

Lots of my kits have matching snares. Sometimes I'll use them on a gig, sometimes not. I don't think its a necessity, but is nice to have. Great for displaying.

I have some matching snares and some chrome snares. It's always nice to have a matching snare. I recommend that you acquire another matching sdnare, especially since your chromed snares also look fine with any of your kits. This way you have more sonic choices.

What really bugs me is when I want to build a new snare yet really don't care to have another chrome snare! (You see, I will desire to be able to play it with any kit I want.) I will probably end up with another bare maple wood snare, slightly darkened and glossed up with some polyurethane.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!
