Modern bop kits

Loading...

Hello Everyone,

So with having had several holy grail (and still owning some) bop kits I thought I would get inputs on new or modern bop kits. For me here are a few that I enjoy.

1. Sonor - I am a HUGE Sonor fan and I enjoy my SQ2 bop but am still after a Prolite and Sunset beech bop kit.

2. Canopus - For $1599 you get a complete made in Japan bop kit with matching snare. The more I listen to this kit the more I enjoy it.

3. Gretsch - I have to admit the new Broadkaster drums sound great. On top of that I actually LOVE the snare drums. For me the weak point for most Gretsch kits were always the snares. Now both the USA Custom and Broadkaster snares sound great.

What are some of yours? What I find interesting is that from a sound point of view the Yaiba offers a very honest offering at a VERY reasonable price.

The Canopus kits sound really nice. Im not sure the Gretsch's came out so well though.

I read what you said so I had another go at A/B-ing those video's again. I really can't get on with that Gretsch. It might be the tuning. Maybe its the drummers touch. Those Toms are to me anyway a bit toneless, apart from some errant overtones. Nice looking kit though.

The Red Canopus kit in the first video is well mic'd. The sound is a bit like my 60's Downbeats. I must admit though that they're not as pretty as the Gretsch's, and they do look cheaper.

I happened to come across a mid 90's Pearl Masters Custom Bop kit recently. 18" virgin bass drum, 12" tom, 14" floor tom. I must say, I am impressed with them. The bass drum is punchy and bright and both toms have a nice tone about them. Surely the thin maple shells help. The finish is natural maple w/chrome hardware. While it came with a 6.5"x14 snare, I haven't really messed with that yet. Too many go to snares for the application I guess. After doing a little research, I find they are pretty rare! Apparently, Bop kits weren't very popular in the mid 90's.

Interesting. A Jazz drummer who I loosely know had a conversation with me about Pearl Jazz sets some years ago. He said the best he'd played was a DLX in BOP sizes. Absolutely swore by them.

Poor man's option... Tama Stage Star. 18-10-12-14... 13 inch snare that doesn't cut it but the kit itself is a great for a hack like me who always wanted a bop kit and had $200 to spend. Jump For Joy

Not a Guru... just interested..

I have this small kit but I don't play it much - I like it.

I liked the Gretsch, mainly the kick. I kinda like this weird Rogers bop kit.
