This interesting on many levels, First his playing. 2nd his equipment playing paiste cymbals I know he used them, 3rd the bass drum pedal. 4th his band watching him. Enjoy.

Yes, that's a great video indeed!

It was taken in 85 or 86 in Berlin, Germany. I recorded the whole concert through a live TV show on VHS cassette back then and watched it again and again. Never got tired of watching it. Still got the tape somewhere in the basement :)

Allow me to add a little "backstory" to this regarding Buddy and his use of Paiste cymbals:

In this particular concert video, the Ride he is playing was a gift from Tomas Paiste who had brought it to this performance for Buddy. Interestingly, BR never really "played" Paiste, although he DID do some ads endorsing them back in the early 60's! He was an "A" Zildjian guy through and through, although he did occasionally play Paiste Rides here and there when they were given to him as gifts. He always went right back to the Zildjian A's though. Also...

Buddy's endorsing of K Zildjian cymbals back in the 50's as Blair mentioned is true!... what isn't true is that he ever really played them. There are no pics/film/media other than those K Zildjian ads actually showing that Buddy ever played them. Personally I believe he did!, but briefly .. because .. as nice as the K's are, that wasn't the sound he needed to propel a 15 piece big band. When he was doing more small group playing is when he most probably tried the K's... but that was very short lived.

Regarding the Rogers Swivo-Matic bass drum pedal: The Swivo was undoubtedly Buddy's FAVORITE bass drum pedal hands down! He used a Rogers Swivo-Matic throughout many endorsements with other companies with Slingerland coming to mind as well as Trixon/Vox and Fibes. When BR was with Ludwig in the late 70's.. ( and for the 3rd time! ) .. he was playing a Ludwig Speed King mostly .. but .. when he started playing the restored 40's Slingerland RK's shown here, it was back to the Rogers Swivo-Matic!

Amazing playing!!! If I live to be a million, I could never begin to match Buddy's skills! What I find intriguing though is the lack of joy in the faces of his band-mates. It almost appears that if they took their eyes of the master for a moment, they'd be in big trouble. No smiling. All in a serious mode. On the other hand, I suppose I'll never begin to understand the sheer genius of such an icon.

Glad you enjoy all the backstory!, and... I can't really say more than this at this time ... but ... I was approached about a book at the Chicago Drum Show. I am interested!, and pics were taken of each drum in my collection in a controlled location and in HD. So... I guess it's just a matter of working out the details?
