What was the best sounding drum set you ever had? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

This does not count collectability as a factor. For example I had a set of early 80's Tama Imperialstars that sounded unbelievable. My favorite sounding drum set I have ever owned is one that I regret selling last year. It was a 1970 Ludwig Standard in Bronze Strata. They just could not be tuned improperly. They sounded great with the crappy heads that came when I bought them. They sounded better with coated ambassadors top and bottom and I know that they sound awesome for the guy who bought them (i need a moment here . . . . ). Anyway, second fave would be a mid 70's Big R Rogers kit.

Rogers. The sparkling blue pearl 66 Cleveland Dayton mix tag set. or the other one, or the other,.....I do like the Rogers drums I own.

or the Ayotte Custom 1995 set I had for 10 years. 7x14 six ply with re rings Ayotte Custom snare drum was to die for. Also a late 63/early64 Rogers Powertone 5x14, has been a pure joy to play since I picked it up in 2003.

Actually, two of the best sounding kits I've owned I got for peanuts, both were Ludwig. The Slingerlands I've had would be a close second, then Fibes, Ayotte and Rogers. All very close, I mean, the Ayotte kit was great in live situations, projected like crazy, but didn't have the warm sound I loved so much from my Ludwig and Slingerland kits.

So far my `68 Rogers has probably been the best sounding kit. I have a set of new Ludwig Classic Maples that are a close second.

Got these a little over a week ago, they sound way better than the older WFL I traded for them. Even this 6 lug Pioneer snare sounds awesome! One of the best sounding kits I've owned so far!

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
