Very early Dyna purchase! Last viewed: 15 hours ago

If you didn't see it on eBay, it wasn't there long(less than 2 hours). I don't usually pop on something so quick, but I just couldn't turn away!Toilet The seller bought it at an estate sale and didn't know much about it other than internet and eBay research, but for $400, it was worth the chance!

S/N-1390 !!!

That's one of the earliest I've seen in quite a while.

B&B lugs, clockface, it's all original, and it's all there except one tension screw!

Which I need btw - PM me if you have one please.Hurting

Well it came today, and I must say, it's nearly flawless!

The chrome is perfect! I have cleaned the shell already and it is free of any pitting whatsoever! Has the correct higher hoops, snares, frame is straight, both sets of chords are present, all washers and screws are correct. Doesn't appear to have ever been apart.

As is known for these lugs, they are weak, 7 of the 10 have hairline cracks, but it doesn't bother me!

Can't wait to finish cleaning and post some after photos.

Here are a couple from the auction:

I just love these Dynasonics, setting them up, and hearing them! This is the earliest one I've ever had. The 390th one ever made!

Well, it's been several days now and I have completely tore down the drum and thoroughly cleaned it.

This is probably the 12th or so Dynasonic I've revived, and I must say, I waited for the big let down, which never came! Everything on this drum is almost perfect!

The shell:

While there was impressions from one of the lugs that took the load in a "drop" and was pushed inward, it happened to be one of the lugs without a hairline crack(go figure!). Also a little bit under the strainer. No problem, as I have corrected this before. Take time and while you cannot bring it back to new, you can get close. I have a 4x4 piece of wood with a 7" radius cut and a ball bearing that I use. Back and forth slowly!

The lugs:

All of the chrome on this is excellent and the lugs are no exception. As mentioned, 7 of the 10 have the hairline crack, which is why the B&B lugs didn't last long.

The Clockface strainer & butt plate we also excellent. A complete tear down and fresh lubricant, smooth as, well you know!

The Snare frame:

All Original! I do have a questions for anyone else with an early Dnyasonic: The ends do not have the "tips", but rather appear to have something wrapped around the ends, the dipped with a rubberized coating. Never seen that! Can anyone tell me if that is original?

the Hoops:

Unbelievable! I thought for sure the top hoop would have some pitting or rust. As I cleaned them I was amazed how clean they came! A minor fleck here and there, but for a set of the early "high boy" hoops, these are about as pristine as you will find! Sorry, I didn't get a picture of them, but I will post some photo's tomorrow when I get it reassembled.

All in all, screws, washers, frame, hoops, the originality and condition of this drum just took my breath away. My wife even told me to "shut up" about it because I kept going on and on about it. If it wasn't for the one missing tension screw, it would be complete. I had a usable replacement on hand, but sure would like to find a correct one. Again, please PM me if you have one to spare!

Just great! I recently sold a late 60's one in great shape, fully original and complete and I have an early 80's big R version minus the snare bridge. Still a great snare with standard wires. The heavy brass shell sounds great! Congrats on a good find.

Very lucky, especially on the frame. That is the first gen frame. Very hard to replace.

Thanks!

I wasn't sure about the snare frame, glad to hear it is as original as the rest if the drum.

The seller picked this up at an estate sale outside of Hagerstown, MD. The case that came with it(as well as some like new vintage Ludwig sticks) had an old "Illini" sticker on it, so it is probably from the Illinois area.

In one word: WOW!

Then I might add, that the chrome on rims and shell of my pretty early Dyna also came out exceptionally clean without any pitting. Perhaps they did the chroming better back then? Or perhaps you (and I) happened to find a Dyna that was never set up right and thus was never played extensively but sent into early retirement?
