What would you guys do. Vintage Ludwig kit question. Last viewed: 9 minutes ago

I recently purchased a Late 50's early 60's Ludwig three piece drum set in white marine pearl. 14x22, 9x13, 5.5x14 super classic snare. These drums are in amazing shape and came with original snare stand, hi hat stand, cymbal stand, cymbal arms for bass drum and foot pedal. In addition, a 13 inch Zildjian A thin set of hi hats, an 18 inch Zildjian medium crash ride and a thinner 18 inch Zildjian crash all from the 50's/60's. These drums also have the original calf skin heads. Here is my dilemma. I have checked into purchasing a period matching 16x16 floor tom and the outlook is not so good. These drums have the transition period badge and the closest I have seen are late WFL's or early Ludwig badge with no serial numbers. These were not for sale, but sold on ebay. The problem is, these typically sell for $400-$500. I have been down this path before searching and searching for a matching floor tom to no avail. I have never pieced a drum set out but am considering it for the first time. I hate dealing with ebay and my local St. Louis Craigslist sucks. I currently have three vintage kits listed on Craigslist (5 piece early 70's Ludwig in oyster blue pearl with matching supraphonic, 3 piece 50's Slingerland and a 3 piece 60's Slingerland) combined for $1900 or sold separately for very aggressive prices. The wife is starting to get on me (no not that way) because I have 8 drum sets. This white marine pearl kit will probably bring in more than twice what I paid for it if I part it out. It kills me to do that. Any advice.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

If I am not mistaken, you acquired these not too long ago, correct? Perhaps you haven't waited long enough....about the time you get rid of them, one will pop up....as I have found out a few times in the last few years.

I don't have the money or space to buy your kit...it's ultimately your decision, but....PLEASE DON"T PART IT OUT! It really deserves to stay together.

I have a red sparkle transition kit i've been waiting years for, for a floor tom. Sometimes thats just how it goes. BUT, I have a 70s red sparkle floor tom I use so i'm at least able to play them. I wouldn't part a kit unless I knew they did't come together....That's when you'll get stuck with random parts of it. It's basically two drums. keep them together....

Sounds like you've made up your mind already to part it out. Since you asked for opinions... DON"T! Those are -classic drums- that 'someone else' would want to complete and play. If you don't want to complete it, give someone else the chance. It just pains me to see vintage kits reduced to orphans because one drum is missing from the kit. Just my 2 cents, you asked.

Too many great drums to list here!

First thing to try - list the 3 drums together for more than twice what you paid. I mean, who knows, right...? :)

My mind is definitely not made up. I really respect the opinions on this board. More than likely I will keep the kit. It is fun to search. When I say piece I did not mean the drums themselves. I was referring to the cymbals, stands and calf skin heads.

I don't see any dilemma, I just see three beautiful kits and a cool snare. Put them for sale here, I'm sure someone will buy one of them.

Happy wife happy life....just my thoughts. I had a lot of cool kits and now a happy little collection of amazing kits. I would sell all except 1. Anyway drums will always be around to buy for many more years. Let a few go.
