You ask for opinions on how many plies. I have two opinions on that matter.

1. enough plies to make the drums

2. why should anyone really care if they like the drums, anyway?

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

For those wishing to calculate an expected value for a vintage drum it matters whether it is one ply or plywood. That is why some people might care.

And the following illustrates where I see the boundaries. I find that words without pictures aren't that much use in communicating these things.

The red arrows top to bottom show where I'm picking up

boundary between wrap and outer ply

boundary between outer and middle ply

boundary between middle and inner ply

boundary between inner ply and reinforcement ring

Hope this helps.

Zen - thanks for the enlargement! Now I can tell you that it's a 3-ply (Maple) shell. The lay-up is; Maple/Poplar/Maple w/Maple re-rings. Good shell composition, it'll make for a fine sounding drum.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

How about this scenario. You're in the market for a specific drum set with a certain shell make up. You find a listing that states exactly what you're looking for . You make the purchase and then the set turns out not to be what was advertised by a long shot.

I asked for opinions hoping people would take a look and offer opinions that might be of help. My eyes are not great and it is sometimes difficult for me to see small detail.

Thanks to the people who chimed in with the intent of being of service and helping out. Much appreciated.

Sanity: if the drum is question is the photo you supplied than the copy of one section of your photo I've annotated (3 posts back) should do the trick to convince a sticky seller. You can download it, send it to the seller, or whatever you like. I find a picture is worth 1,000 words when it comes to this sort of thing.

I very much appreciate your help. Thanks for taking the time to do that.

Zenstat chastised my response thusly

"For those wishing to calculate an expected value for a vintage drum it matters whether it is one ply or plywood. That is why some people might care".

That picture clearly shows that the shell is made up of more than one ply of wood. So, your retort is more flippant than my response was. The original question was a simple request for opinions on the number of plies with no allusion to the shell possibly being made from a single ply.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Who's on first

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
