Have you checked all the screws in the drum for tightness?

You may also check to see if the springs inside the lugs rattle. They may just need to be wrapped again with cymbal felt or sponge or whatever.

If it is the wires, a throw-off that is out of tolerance by rugged use will wiggle and giggle and never stay/pull tight.

Crank the snares tight, and engage it, hold the drum by the hoops and shake it hard for a bit, if the throw rattles or anything else, that may be the issue.

A good in tolerance drum will not make a sound when shaken like this.

I was wondering if your muffler might be loose. and you also say when you engage the muffler a bit, the noise stops. check the small retaining nut and the nut that holds the bat felt on. also, the main nut that secures the lever itself on the inside of the shell is notorious for coming loose. ive run into that several times. good luck.

Oh thanks for this, on the inside I noticed by chance that only one internal lug bolt was loose a bit others seemed at quick feel ok, I think strainer is solid, but when I get to drum at mams ! House tommorow I will try doing what you said holding it and shaking for any looseness, I've heard people talking about stuffing lugs with cotton etc like oddball on here said, what exactly is this and what do you do and how? Anyway can't do anything till tommorow. No the muffler isn't loose what I mean is cause its stopping the resonance more I stopped snares rattling (when striking drum )

No the muffler isnt loose what I mean is that by doing this (engaging muffler) it seems to be stopping the strong overtone that drum has and this in turn does seem to stop the overlong snare rattle w hen I strike the drum, at end of day though why should you have to resort to muffling

Sorry for so many of my own posts, anyway I've Shaken the drum and there is absolutely no rattle, it is a problem with the snares rattling/BUZZING when I play the drum and I don't mean the well known term of "sympathetic snare buzz" , so I can't get a totally crisp clean snare response. It seems to me to be doing it because of the resonating strong overtone of the drum, yea if I muffle in any way it seems to be ok , but it is doing my head in cos it shouldnt be doing this, I wonder if it's the COB rims that could be contributing to it? Another thing is it was stated as having cob hoops but when I put a magnet on them the top one doesn't stick but the bottom one also doesn't but it seems to very slightly just attract it.

OK so it`s in tolerances. Does it line up well with the snarebed ? I mean is everything straight across from each other ? It`s hard without seeing and hearing it but someone will relate sooner or later. My SONORS do no such thing.

That's what I was thinking. Make sure that the snares as a whole are square with the butt and strainer – meaning that they are not tied on crooked. If they are, the snares will kind of twist when pulled tight, leaving some of them loose.

Another thing – I recently got a diplomat to use as a snare side head, and it was waaayyy thicker than a normal snare side head and made my supra incredibly ringy (almost like a tom). They're great for resonant heads on toms, but not thin enough for snares I think. They sell snare side heads specifically for this purpose, and they work extremely well.

Also – could it be that you're tuning the reso head way too tight? I've found that medium tuning on the snare side really helps cut some ringy-ness.
