Ludwig COB vs COS Hoops

Hi, I've been playing a pre-serial brass Super Ludwig with original, brass snare-side hoop and Supra-phonic chrome over steel batter-side hoop. I've finally got the original brass top hoop on it's way in the post to me now and I've been wondering if there will be a huge difference in sound when I put this new (old) brass hoop on the drum. I somehow doubt the sound will be different, but I don't know. I bought this hoop because it was driving me crazy having a non original hoop on the drum, not so much because it was sounding terrible with the steel hoop, but would you think I'll hear a difference when I put the hoop on? Will my drum sound 60 dollars better? Ha ha! I somehow doubt that, but I'd like to know if there will be any difference at all.

I don't notice a difference while playing on the heads but I do notice a difference when doing rimshots and rim clicks.

I too don't hear a lot of difference. I think youre making the right call by getting the correct one for your drum though. just remember that they do dent up a little easier since they are softer than steel.

Place it on a flat surface (kitchen counter-top,) and make sure it's nice and flat before installing it.

Enjoy! Great snare drums, I love mine.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Cheers John, I'll do that. The first thing I'll do is test it with a magnet. The seller assured me it was brass and came from an early 60's Supra. He also said it sits flat on the drum. I like the brass hoops on my WFL. When I was changing the heads on that snare I gave the hoop a tap with a stick and it had much more sustain and sounded more musical than the later chrome over steel hoops, so I'm sure having brass hoops on my cob snare will make a difference however subtle it may be.

I play C/W music and you can believe Gerald when he said that "rimclicks are different sounding when comparing steel vs brass. Rimclicks are vital to me for the genre of music I play. Brass all-the-way.
