Hello. Can anyone help in identifying this kit please? I suspect it's early 70's but I'm unsure of the exact model?
Any idea of the value? Just the 5 drums as pictured. Thanks. :-)

I see maple interior and rerings on the bass drum, so I think youre right. 3 ply with butcher block wrap. that tri tom mount/setup is something you don't see everyday.

My second set ever was a Butcher block. That wrap can stand anything.
Thanks for your input Mike, I agree with your appraisal as it happens. Although I'm no expert on vintage Ludwigs I'm slowly getting to grips with them. I haven't seen this set in the flesh yet but once I'm sure of the model I'll get to see them and maybe put an offer in :-)
I don't recall Ludwig ever having the triple tom setup in their catalogs with a catchy name. At least not prior to the Modular hardware period and any of those sets would be 6 ply. A "model" name is somewhat immaterial anyhow as all the drums were the same, only the sizes and arrangement varied between the "named" sets. A specially ordered set might not have a name but would have the same drums in it.
The triple tom mounting post is something of a rarity and I only remember seeing it in the parts catalog, not the general catalog. Certainly not something you see everyday. Slingerland did catalog such a set and this appears to be Ludwig's answer to that for people who wanted three toms up top.
Thanks K.O. that's good to know. The vendor's getting back to me in a couple of days with the serial numbers, I'll keep you posted....
We, on this forum keep acting as free appraisal helpers for guys who want to sell their grampa's, dad's, uncle's, neigbour's, etc drums...How about people doin' their own homework?...Specially when they never contribute anything to this forum and after the deal is sealed they never come back...
To each his/her own but personally, I'm happy to share the knowledge that I've acquired, information that has so freely been given to me by people on the forums with a new vintage enthusiast or someones grandson selling their grandfathers drums... I see no harm in helping someone out and possibly helping them avoid falling victim to unscrupulous "knowledgeable" buyers and drum flippers lurking about.
Yes, with a search and click of a mouse there is plenty of information out there, some of it correct and plenty of it not so factual, just plain hearsay. Even with all that information at our finger tips, there is still stuff that I never would have learned without actually handling drums for years and asking questions.
It would hardly be a community if we all held what we know so close to the chest that only the preapproved would receive the luxury of help and answers.
Like I said, I respect the opposite opinion too, but I don't agree.

SC: Just check how many of the people with one or two posts come back after selling their stuff. Its always the same: "Im just checking how much this set is worth" Once they found out (for free and without spending years and years of trial and error like most of us here) they go with the old "I just want this set to go to good hands...Any takers here?"...I have no problem sharing the knowledge. But lately its obvious who's here for the love of drums or just to make a quick sale taking advantage of the "free for all" information shared here.

I hear what you're saying and please know I'm not trying to argue the point. I respect what you're saying and I see it too, but I personally don't appraise for a living and I just don't see how it hurts or how we'd decide who's privy to some help and who's not. Having said that, I can usually get a sense of who's genuinely trying to sell a relative or friends drums and who's the estate sale flipper. I'm less inclined to speak up when I can tell its one of those estate sale people. Not that there is anything wrong with doing that, but, there is no connection with drums , its simply another commodity, so they can do the leg work as far as I'm concerned.
Its pretty cool to see some of the drums in question too.
But I do understand what you're saying. I just don't mind giving back because almost everything I know was taught to me by you guys. That, and actually handling drums. I love this instrument!
But in regards to the OP, I think those drums should sound great. 3 ply and clear interiors, can't beat em!
