Help ID Ludwig Black Oyster Pearl

Loading...

Hey guys, lurker here. I was hoping I could get some help identifying this black oyster pearl snare. I believe it is a pioneer, but I want to make sure. I believe it is a 6.5", but I am not sure. I'm not a drummer myself. I would like to know the approximate value if possible. Thank you!

You have a 1960s Oyster Black Pearl snare with six lugs, a P-83 Throw, a P-32 butt end and a white felt baseball bat tone control. Normally a Pioneer would be a six lug drum in the 5"x14" size. Yours looks a little deeper than 5", but that could be distortion in the pictures. Measure the depth of the shell only, ignoring the hoops.

As far as value, yours is worth more than a typical Pioneer because of the wrap (Rongo connection). How much more than the average, I am not sure. Others will venture an opinion. I would suggest searching completed sales on eBay and paying attention to selling prices and prices asked that were too high to make a sale.

Collecting information about the following for ongoing research projects:
Gretsch drums with serial numbers,
Ludwig Keystone and B/O badge drums with serial numbers and date stamps,
Ludwig Standards from 1968-73, and
Ludwigs with paper labels from 1971-72

Thanks for the response. By my measurement, the shell seems to be right at 6.5"

eBay removed the listing. It said someone reported it as being inaccurate description. That's why I posted here for more info.

Ludwig made 6.5 pioneers during this period. don't see too many of them. had no fancy names for them. most were in the mahogany finish. nice to see one like this. most likely an early 65 model. looks great!

66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Very nice drum, but considering it has at least three differences from a Ringo snare (1.) different size, 2.) different model/number of lugs 3.) different tone control placement) I would say it doesn't have a whole lot of "Ringo affect" going for it. Normally I'd value it in the $350-$450 range but because of the OBP wrap I would say $575- $600 is "all the money" for it for someone that really had to have it.

5" deep Oyster Black Pioneers have sold from anywhere from $500 to $1200. They are sort of the poor man's Ringo snare (being poor I have one myself that I bought for $600 several years ago). That's a lot of money for a Pioneer snare and it all comes down to that wrap. An OBP Jazzfest like Ringo's, which is the exact same drum as the Pioneer except for having two more lugs, can sell for as much as $4000 and usually a minimum of around $2000 so since these Pioneers are the next closest thing their price is pulled up.

Not sure what effect the extra depth would have as that puts it another step away from being a "Ringo" snare. However it seems people are willing to pay a premium for OBP 4" deep Downbeat snares which are just as far removed from being a proper Ringo drum (more so in fact since they use a different lug design) so who can say for sure. Certainly it is worth more than a 6.5" Pioneer in most any other color or finish (unless it's Oyster Pink or one of the mod wraps) but how much more is tough to say.

Looks like a really nice drum.
