Tama Swingstar

Hi folks,I have been using a Tama Swingstar 22",12,13,16 at our practice house. It is dirty and has some original Tama heads on it. I busted the bass head last night ,not because of hard hitting but it was an old head and wore right through at the beater spot. Anyway I am in the process of cleaning and shining it up. How do Evans G2 clear sound for the toms batters. Clear Ambs for the reso, Evans Emads for the Bass?

The original Tamas were clear with a power center white dot about 3,4, inches in diam. They have the Granitone interiors, and Red Tama Badge. Probably early '80 ish.

All drums in like new condition edge wise and interior wise.

Ed - If you're happy with the kind of highly focused sound you were getting from your white dots, Remo makes a clear black dot head (that I always use on Vistalites,) that will give you the same sound. Evans EMAD for the bass drum is an excellent choice. Great BD batter heads. Head choices for drums is always such a subjective thing that I usually hesitate to offer advice. I played a set of Tama's just like yours for awhile, so I 'kind of' imagine that I know the sound you're going for. Try the REMO black dots!

Thanks for the reply, I have amb on one Rogers all original and g2s on another Rogers that I redid the edges on,keeping the same profile. I just carefully squared em up and cut. I use the redone Rogers for a 50s 60s band and they work great with the g2s. I will give the dots a try, I have never used em before. If they sound good at practice on the Tama I might try em out on the Rogers.

Funny, ordered Remo clear black dots for my 1982 Tama Swingstar last Thurs. Putting this kit back period correct so thought this was the way to go. 12,13 and 16 black dots and 2 22 clear Remo Ambs was $108 from drumfactorydirect. Existing bottom clear Remos are fine so not replacing those.

It had decent Evans coated G2's on it when I got it. Not a thing wrong with the sound there. Will update when the order gets here.

One thing I found on my bearing edges is they liked a smoothing with 3000 grit sandpaper and some Beeswax rubbed in.

What wrap is yours? Have 4 spare bass lugs by any chance?

Thanks!

HA!! Let me know how the dots sound. The wrap is Metallic White I believe. It looks like it in the cats. But the wrap looks more greyish/bluish to me. Could be faded Pewter.Dunno.

Sorry,no lugs to be had.

Those early 80's Swingstar's are work-horse drum kits! I had one in the rehearsal studio we used to rent in the late 80's/early 90's. I took them out on gigs from time to time and they were always great sounding. I had a set of black dots on them that lasted forever and they just put the sound of those drums 'right in the zone.' Coated Ambassadors would kill them! Put on some black dots and wing-o they would sing.

Here's a shot of my Tama's from way back in the stone age! LOL
