well it finally turned up and it's very nice. I even got a nice message from the seller saying they were initially unsure about shipping internationally but they are glad they did and happy it's gone to a good home. I will, of course, send them photos after the refurb. It was her husband's drum in high school and it was a little difficult parting with it.

Anyway, it's in very nice shape, in round with no serious work required. It needs a clamshell throw handle (have sent an email to Emory at Drumatix and awaiting a reply) and the tension knob side of the clamshell is a bit twisted. I don't know if this is common but I'll try and coax it back into line. The wires are original and when I removed them they relaxed into a very drunken version of their former selves. So I might have to replace them.

Here she is with the (rather excellent) chrome parts removed. And yes, she's single ply.

That's going to look as new when you are done! Nice!

BTW...I saw new Puresound wires for your drum on Amazon a few weeks back for $13.50 plus ship!>>Were $40+ new...

Looks like you got a single ply snare for a really nice price, and I like the dark blue that some Slingerlands fade to.I don't know why but it seems like that dark blue I associate with vintage slings the most.

Ok, so I've finished the refurb on this snare. I got a new throw handle from Emory at Drumatix and a good friend of mine did his best to remove the twist out of the tensioner side of the clamshell housing. He did a great job too. I installed the original wires and have messed around with the internal adjustments to try and get it sounding right. The wires don't completely disengage with the head but on the plus side it sounds brilliant with the snares turned on. It is fitted with a Remo coated control sound batter which works nicely on this drum.

I have to admit I thought I wasn't going to like the drum based on what I've read about the strainer, and admittedly it does seem pretty flawed in its design. But I really like the sound of the drum.

I heard you need to stick a little washer under both ends of the wires for them to work properly....
