Silver Glass Glitter question

What is THE best Silver Glitter or Sparkle?

I'm thinking what looks the very best under lights.

Is it a vintage Glitter/Sparkle? Or are some of the modern Glitters / Sparkles better?

What drum company had the very best and why?

Ludwig?

Gretsch?

Rogers?

Slingerland?

Carlton?

others?

It would be too hard to put examples here I know - the drums in 'real life' have to be seen to appreciate the finish.

Let me know your thoughts please.............

I tend to favor the glass glitter wraps over sparkles as they look a bit more luxurious but as an exception I like silver sparkle better than silver glass glitter. The aluminum flakes inside silver sparkle are actually silver while the crushed glass inside modern "Silver" Glitter looks more white to my eye. Having said that though I do have a vintage silver sparkle (which is actually glass glitter) Round Badge set from the 60's and that wrap actually does look silver so I'm not sure what may have changed over the years. I rewrapped a snare drum to go with it in modern silver glass but it's too whitish. Probably not a problem under stage lights either way since they will end up whatever color you shine on them.

Sparkle wraps are also much easier to work with if you're doing a rewrap job for the first (or even the tenth) time.

Silver Sparkle seemed to work just fine for Joe Morello.

Thanks for the wrapping tip Kevin.

Funny you should mention Joe Morello's Silver Sparkle because that's exactly what I was looking at before I started this Thread! I was looking some video clips on youtube of him and also some photos.

I will just have to compare a 60's/70's Silver Sparkle to this Gretsch drum. The Glitter really is a knock out....but the 'real' pieces of silver & copper in my Champagne Spkl Gretsch is nice too.....the flakes of silver really stand out. I've not seen a vintage Ludwig silver sparkle to compare that's why I posted this thread. Just curious that's all....

There is no way on earth I could take a photo....at least with my compact Panasonic camera - that would do justice to these wraps. And even if I had a better camera...the photos of the finishes are never anywhere near as nice as if you have the drum in hand.

I took these a few minutes ago and I know they're terrible but you can at least see the difference in SSB1 Silver Glitter and 2011 Champagne Sparkle here.

I prefer the glass glitter to the little pieces of uniform size aluminum sparkle, Close up pictures of the "sparkle" wraps show a lot of empty spaces between the little aluminum flakes. To me, the gray spaces between the little flakes on silver sparkle wrap are a turn off. I know that the full effect of a drum wrap is from a distance of three feet or more. But, I see them much closer up as I play them. And, I prefer the more lush appearance of the little iregularly sized glass shards. My personal taste does not include silver drums--sparkle, glass, or metal. But, that's just my personal opinion. Obviously, I'm in a very small minority. I own and love my vintage Gold Glass Glitter and Champagne Sparkle drums.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

I think Rogers had the best silver sparkle (glitter). That stuff seems to "glow", especially under lighting.

I looked at this same question closely when I chose the Delmar Silver Glass Glitter. To me the standard silver sparkle looked too much like uniform confetti. Under lights there is also a huge difference. The glass glitter reflects like a billion diamonds or little stars while the silver sparkle gives off a flatter reflection. But that's just one opinion...Here is a shot of original WFL silver sparkle which to me looks like Silver Glass Glitter. The other benefit is the increase in projection that the solid fiberglass layer provided to my thin Camco shells. They sound even better wrapped in Glass Glitter...On the downside, It's pain to work with and don't make the mistake of thinking you can trim it by hand once it's applied...

Yes - Leedybdp - I can see the 'greay spaces' between the Glitter on my Gretsch SSB tom. I have a Gold Sparkle/Glitter(?) 40 Gretsch tom that is amazing! The wrap is full - no spaces showing through and it is VERY bright and reflective.

Cooper: I will look at the Rogers stuff but I'm thinking I would not be able to get new wrap now - correct?

Slingalud: I will look at the Delmar Silver Glass Glitter....that sounds like what I'm after here. It would be just for one drum and I think I would have it wrapped by a pro. If it was Sparkle wrap I would give it a try myself.

This shot of my 40's Gretsch tom wrap was taken when I received the drum. The drum came packed inside a 40 Gretsch floor tom and all the hardware except the badges were packed seperately for shipping.

Again - a photograph does NOT do justice to this or other sparkle/glitter wraps....at least when I'm involved taking the photos. This wrap is very 'sparkley and glittery'

I took this shot of the 40's what I think is glass glitter wrap.....it has some black spots here and there from aging I believe....but other than that it's pretty spectacular wrap. If I could get this is Silver it's what I'm looking for....without the aging spots of course.

Rogers used glass glitter in it's 'sparkle' wrap all along, but for a while in the 70's the 'silver sparkle' was the aluminum flake variety before being discontinued.

I like the Rogers silver glass glitter, they really look cool under lights. Here's a kit I use to own.
