Help me identify the finish on these 70s Ludwigs Last viewed: 7 minutes ago

I'm looking to buy this kit for recording (I'm a recording engineer and a crappy drummer). The seller says they're early 70s 3ply and all original, but from browsing the catalogs on this site the only finish that I can see that looks close is "silver silk" and these don't look like that to me, except maybe the way the top tom looks in the first pic (at least from the few pics of silver silk drums that I've been able to find). I'm not sure I care if they've been re-wrapped because I'm not a collector, but I guess I'd prefer that they're all original so they'll hold their resale value if I decide to sell them someday. They seem like a pretty good deal (@$750), especially if they are all original. What do you experts think?

Perhaps it's Gold Silk wrap that's faded?

$750 is a reasonable price (especially if the Supra

in photo 2 is included.

What I'm seeing looks like a matched early '70s set with all

the badges in place, correct 17" legs and mufflers intact.

Interior and bearing edges look good on the 16"; hopefully

all the other drums are the same.

Looks like a deal to me.

thanks folks. I hadn't thought about it being faded gold silk. The snare and the cases are included. I was considering asking him to knock off a bit and keep the snare (it's a 302 and I already have a supraphonic) but I figure it can't hurt to have two flavors..

I think you mean a 402? if that is true it is a very good deal, One today in vgc just sold for $902.00 on ebay.

It is a rocker series snare drum not as valuable as an Lm 402 but it is a good sounding snare drum.

Yeah, what VM2k says. You can grab the 302's cheap. They are Asian, but VERY well built. I have one, and have owned two or three. Many times you find them as part of a student package... snare (302), stand and stuff in the deluxe rolling or normal oversized 'Ludwig' labeled bag. The last one I got was a ten dollar yard sale find for the package. That LM 302 will be a nice addition to your studio. If someone turns up their nose at the 302, ask them to tune it correctly and give it a whirl. They really do sound nice.

The best part is, it sounds different than an Acrolite or a 402. Tuned correctly, you can make that 302 ring like a bell if you're looking for that sound.

It looks to me like theres only a reinforcement ring on the bottom of the floor tom- would that be normal?

Here's a better pic of the finish. I still can't figure out what it is but I guess I don't care. Looking at the hoop on the kick the inner band matches the drum finish so if this was a re-wrap someone did a pretty careful job I guess. The serials are all close (consecutive for the rack toms) and from what I can figure out make these a 1970 kit? They're 150XXXX. Looking forward to hearing these today- I think I'm going to like them..
