Competing with Ebay Last viewed: 1 hour ago

No,but not a bad idea!

eBay takes a flat 10% on the item..

Paypal (eBay again) gets 3.2% for domestic...4.2% for International..

Then..how much do they get on shipping?..I want to say 10% also...

Thanks to this thread, I checked out reverb.com and decided to join. I am impressed with their policies, fees, etc. and I listed a drum set and a snare drum on it. In about half the time, I actually have more "views" than what I've gotten on eBay. That right there tells me they are alreading reaching a lot of people, and the people they are reaching are the people I'm wanting to reach! We'll see how it goes when I sell something, but I do plan on listing more.

Now, I'm probably going to ruffle a few feathers here, but if everyone has no problem stating their opinions, I can voice mine, too, right?

I tire of all the complaining about eBay's "unfair" policies and fees. They are in business to make money. And, NO one is forcing anyone to sell or buy on eBay! I've stated this before... but maybe I need to state it again...

When you sell something on eBay, adjust YOUR price so that you can afford the fees! It's THAT simple! In other words, IF you need/want $500 out of what your selling and it ships for $100, set $560 (or maybe a little more) + 100 shipping as your starting price!! It really IS THAT SIMPLE! That way you get what you want/need and eBay gets their fees WITHOUT IT CUTTING INTO YOUR POCKET.

The same way with buying. Whenever I buy something on eBay, I don't worry about the fees the seller will have to pay, or whether-or-not he has adjusted his price to cover their fees. When I see an item I'm interested in I figure out what I'm willing to pay (total, including shipping)... AND IF IT GOES FOR MORE, I DON'T WIN THE AUCTION! IMO, it's a matter of common sense and self-control!

Yes, Bill. I believe we all have had to adjust what we ask according to what we want out of it - and then it has significantly slowed selling as then it can not compete as well with other people selling the same thing (wherever/however they sell it).

Many are complaining as this has happened in the context of the fees being significantly lower than in the past. Next, Ebay's collecting commission on shipping is quite simply unethical in my opinion. The problem with that is most of us have nothing we can do about it but bend over.

Reverb is certainly gaining traction as I understand it is founded by musicians to better serve musicians - and so long as nothing scandlous happens - it is only a matter of time before it swells into success.

Well, as of right now I've not sold anything on Reverb... but the number of views on my items has blown the number of eBay views out of the water!

I think this is going to be a GOOD thing! Thanks for the heads up!

Well they are certainly trying to serve a specific niche (did I use that word right?) and

1) I suppose it is a pretty big one (a types of musical instruments) and

2) That certainly helps US!

I wonder if our forum leadership should consider throwing significant support behind them? Then again, perhaps they will not do so, on purpose (so as to not alienate).

Hello John!

The position of the VDF has always been to NOT endorse anything outside of the VDF. We can't really. That said... I think this NEW "anti" eBay is interesting! I would think that you.. our membership.. will check in with the yay or nay on www.reverb.com soon enough. Personally? I would love to see another viable alternative to eBay. Back in the day.. ( and I have been an eBay member for a long time! ) .. ebay was FABULOUS! Like so many things, changes happen over time, and usually not so great for the end user/member. That said though: You guys will have to report on what you think! I suspect the general membership is quite interested too!

That would be great if all musicians just sold on Reverb..

Poor Pierre (owner of Feebay) would probably lose sleep over that for a night...seeing as he seems to count every penny, and he is worth 8 BILLION I read recently..

I didn't even realize they charge a fee on shipping. I exclusively purchase vinyl on Ebay and usually from the same store that charges a very small shipping fee, because we all know how out of control shipping rates have become. As far as selling on Ebay, I'm done. the last item I sold for $25, cost me almost $5 in fees. Simply a rip off!

Just as a follow-up on my purchase experience with Reverb.com…the shell arrived yesterday, packed beautifully and true to what was represented in the photos. The whole transaction was every bit as smooth as any I've ever done. And I received a personalized email from someone on the Reverb.com team, thanking me for signing up. I'm a fan!
