Ludwig Bearing Edge Last viewed: 26 minutes ago

Hello,

i'm restoring my Ludwig Drum.

At this time I get a 12x8 Tom and a 16x16 floor tom (thanks to Al!). (3-Ply with clear maple interior)

Now I realize that the bearing edges a different.

The 16x16 floor tom looks right to me, but the 12x8 tom has a really sharp bearing edge.

Did Ludwig had different edges in the 1970s on tom and floor tom ?

Thanks for your help and sorry for my bad english.

You never know with Ludwig, but I have heard that they started doing a sharper edge around the early 70's,but you may see later drums from this period with rounder edges also,as far as I know they did not put rounder edges from toms to toms or from toms to kick for that matter like Rogers started in the 60's or like DW does now.

I have an early 70s Ludwig with the 3-ply maple shells. Mine have the sharp bearing edges on all the drums. Love them! The resonate nicely

From what research I've done, the EARLY Ludwigs had a 30-degree bearing edge, where they later (couldn't say WHEN) went to a 45-degree, which does seem to give a lot more attack. I actually have better luck getting a good tom sound out of the older style 30-degree edges, at least on this kit.
