Making new Gladstone-style lugs...

Loading...

I've posted before about possibly joining Techshop to replicate hard to find parts. I'm still unsure about it due to the large initial expense, however. As an alternative, I started hunting for someone to do some machining work in small quantities.

There are many machine shops in and around Detroit that are hurting for business. I think I've found one that will turn out some Gladstone-style lugs like shown in the picture below. I've also found a guy who will plate them and wants discuss the project over some beers.

I'd like to come as close to possible to the original dimensions. Wondering if anybody has one lug for sale or would be willing to email me some detailed measurements.

Thanks

Jim

I would like eight of them! I hope that you do this.

Are you planning to have them made functional or just visual? Are there possible legal/patent issues? What type of price point are you aiming for?

I've always liked the look of Gladstone lugs. Gretsch currently has a look alike.

I am not thinking abot an exact replica. I simply like the style and want to make something sililar. You bring up an excellent point that I had not considered. I don't want to be the guy who offered an exact copy, which would allow others to then create a fake Gladstone drum. I already have some old Duplex lugs with a similar look to them. I think I will start with those rather than a Gladstone look-a-like.

Thank you for your comment. Very much appreciated.

As far as selling them, my plan is to make small quantities for my own custom drums. Who knows where this will go... I may sell some drums but wont likely be selling lugs.

thanks

jim
