To canister or not to canister Last viewed: 7 hours ago

What is the general consensus on this? I have read many people find them too tall (23-24" height)...

My current seat height is 20-20.5" but i have thought about getting one before...

I would say no.

They look cool but there's a reason they quit offering them. Get one for display purposes but I suggest a nice modern throne that is fully adjustable and highly comfortable.

Yeah, they're not to good for carrying hardware, hardly anyone still makes them, they need their own case, you can't adjust the height, the cushion is not too good, the seat diameter is only 14 inches.

But if that stuff doesn't matter, they sure are cool looking.

I own a few, but they're only for display.

Well...what can I say? They seemed good enough for Buddy, plus you can store stuff in it! I could probably fit all my stands in one, mainly because I don't like to carry a ton of metal around.

I actually use one exclusively. I have one with my 2012 champagne sparkle classic maple and I'm pretty sure I got the last one Ludwig ever made. I have been using them for years and have had many old and new. Currently I have the champagne sparkle one, a 2004 mod orange reissue one, a 1971 mod orange one and a 1960's oyster black one. I have no complaints sitting on mine all night but I'm not sure how it would hold up going on the road though. I like it as well because I keep a small fan in there and during the gig my wallet, cell phone and keys go in there.

Un-air conditioned tour busses and rotary phones were good enough for Buddy as well, but that wouldn't work for me.

I would agree that the canister throne has come and gone. If I wanted one (and I don't) it would not require serious carpentry skills to make one. You could choose the diameter, the height, the type of throne cushion, etc.

Kurt, nice looking kits!

Thanks for the compliment! When I joined my current band two years ago I wanted to order a set that I could use for everything since we play outside most of the summer and inside alot during the winter. This classic maple fit the bill pretty well as I have standard vintage sizes, the rail and cymbal mount as well as the canister. I even use an eight lug CM snare that looks pretty much like a jazzfest. It's like getting a mix of old and new. I was tempted to order the same thing except use legacy shells but in the end it was just too expensive. These have been great though.

I started using a canister back in the mid 90's and the height just seemed to work out for me. People are bulit in all sizes though so I can definately see why some would hate it. The only time I have an issue is I am put on a stage that is not level. That does not happen much at all but it can be a pain.
