Blaemire Phenolic prototype

Allen Blaemire actually did play around with other materials besides fiberglass.

This is a Phenolic shell that I got from his wife Kirsten after Allen died. I would love to have asked him more about it and what he felt about it.

The shell was already drilled for the Leedy lugs that you see here. I also bought a load of Leedy lugs from Kirsten last time I was there. Allen loved Leedy lugs on his shells. It was drilled for a Ludwig 338 throw off but I have yet to find one. This alternative Ludwig throw will have to do till I find one.

The snare is loud...really loud. But it is also a one trick pony. You cannot really get much out of it at lower tunings and it likes to be fairly high in pitch. But at that tuning it kills! It has funk written all over it and I think it would record well at that tuning.

I think Allen could see that the Fiberglass was still a much more versatile shell and stayed with it.

I am glad he did.

Is it a dry sounding shell ?

Not completely...just very focused. It does have a nice metal sounding ping to it but dry as hell in the center of the head.

Jerry - What is 'phenolic?' Is it fiberglass? Acrylic? Plastic? Do you mix it yourself from components?

It is a resin compound... Eg; similar to a Circuit Board, many variations in the formulation "Bakelite" was an early phenolic..

Here is an interesting read....

Kirsten told me that Allen was familiar with the GE and its Phenolic research. That is where he got the the laminate sheets that he made shells with. There were also tom and bass shells that he had but they had all de-laminated as they were stored under his home. The snare shell was in the garage and survived.

Thanks for the link. "Plastics Historical Society" who'da thunkit! The density (after combining the elements) must account for the volume the drum is capable of. 'Thin shell of stiff material' will vibrate more, ergo more air gets moved. Makes sense.
