once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Guitar Center has arguably developed the most visible presence in the music industry. As more people recognize this, they see it is a simple way to trade up or sell gear without the hassles of something like Craigslist, eBay or classifieds. It's just like Carmax; "we'll buy your drums even if you don't buy ours." Trading is always easier than selling outright so it becomes standard practice for many who either don't know or don't care that they are at best receiving wholesale value on their trade or sale. To Guitar Center's credit, they do openly explain that they will only offer wholesale rates. Regardless, this is why you are seeing so much used gear there.

You can't really blame them. Buy low, sell high is an age old, well proven methodology.

The good thing about them and others, is that maybe they keep a few kits out of the land fill...

GC recently gave me a nice amount of cash for a snare I knew I never could sell for what I thought it was worth. I felt guilty, but hey, they've made billions so who cares? Snare still hasn't sold. Though they have the audacity to be selling it at twice what they paid me. Ha! Good luck.

Has anyone ever ordered a kit online from their used gear section? I'm still unclear if you can actually order direct or if they have to ship it to the store nearest you (ala Daddy's Junky Music)...

It should give you an option at checkout. I was able to ship a used ride cymbal to my house from GC.

I bought a nice 6.5 hammered bronze supra used from GC online and they

Shipped it to my house. Price was cheap and drum was perfect.

I was pleased with the transaction, they sent me pictures of every angle I requested and they were very nice to deal with.

The key to selling stuff to GC is to not be insulted by or accept there first offer. They will low ball by less than half of what they will sell it.

I was working with a drum department resource on this drum. Now that I look back, I wonder what was I thinking!

http://www.guitarcenter.com/In-Store-Used-USED-VINTAGE-GRETSCH-1960S-SD-14X6-BLUE-SPRKL-CST-PAINTED-108689914-i3036729.gc

They sent more detailed pictures and the lugs and hoops appeared to have deep pits, it had the Micro-sensitive strainer (with pitting), the Round Badge and a custom paint applied over the original wrap. The only thing probably worth keeping was the shell and badge. I offered them $70, but the store manager did not accept. They didn't even counter offer. They've had this drum for over a year.

They currently have a lot of Rogers Powertone, Dynasonic and Super Ten snare drums between $199 and $299.

I have a strange feeling GC's used vintage inventory is going to get a little smaller. ;)
