Problem with snare buzz...not sympathetic buzzing.

Loading...

I've been messing around with various snare tunings to achieve a fat, somewhat wet sound, without loosing tone definition and have gotten pretty close to my ideal. The problem that I can't figure out is how to get rid of the buzz that comes from the rez head when I strike the drum. It tends to happen when I crank the rez head, no matter the tuning on the batter side. I have adjusted the rez head down a bit, don't want to loose the punch I get from a fairly up-tuned head, and the buzz is still there. I have this problem on both my '65 Slingerland Deluxe Student model & my '49 WFL Concert snare.

I've convinced myself this is a tuning issue, but would love some input from more experienced drummers. I spend a lot of time tuning, but it's mostly self, or youtube learned and am out of ideas.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Brian

Maybe the problem is the wires? I though Puresound made a set of wires to try and hamper this buzzing issue. They are missing wires in the middle or something. There was another thread or two on this subject and I remember the wires being one of the things that were brought up.

Also, call me crazy, but someone said to put foil between the wires and reso head, or something like that??????

No real clear answers here, but that is what I recall the lads saying a little while ago on this subject.

Have you read the Drum tuning Bible?

http://eric.frap.net/sa/bible/profsound.shtml

Have a look and maybe try a few things?

So many variables.

If you put your fingers on the reso head without touching the wires or drum and hit the batter head, does it still buzz ?

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Try backing off the 4 Reso side lugs closest to the strainer, sometimes does the trick.. start with 1/4 turn off on each...

That was me that posted about the Equalizers from Puresound:

They work! These wires eliminate all extraneous snare buzzing. Try a set.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Thanks. I did read that thread, but feel that this is a different issue...could be wrong, though.

Thanks again, drumhack.

Thanks, FFR182! I have not, but will look it up today!

Thanks, oddball. It's not the buzzing from hitting another drum. I have a bit of that...and it does stop if I touch the top head, this is a tighter buzz that comes when I strike the head.

Thanks, longjohn. I always tune that way. It was a trick a friend showed me to get a fatter sound out of the drum. The challenge here is the Slingerland snare beds are so wide, I'm getting a wrinkle in the head when I back off the tension. Baybe I just need a new hazy300 reso head. Hmm....

Thanks, John. I am using som old, not original, Slingerland snare wires. I saw your earlier thread about the Puresound Equalizers & may pull the trigger on some. I've always just gone with Ludwig replacement wires and been pretty happy...until now:)

Thanks again fellas! Got plenty of input to chew on for a bit & will repost with results.

Happy Tuesday,

Brian

I have always heard that buzz is caused by one or more wires not being tight enough on the reso head. Make sure all the wires are tight when engaged.
