Seeking advice on Marcher to J-Fest conversion

Loading...

My black lacquer-nickel set is coming along nicely but I still need a snare:

http://vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=39640

I have a bare 8 lug shell (Leedy I think), but the hole spacing is slightly different. Using it would require filling many holes then re-drilling.

Looking around for alternatives, I purchased the drum shown below last night. Is this a candidate for a Jazz Fest conversion? I've seen a couple of other posts on the topic, but could use some assistance. The seller said that it is 9" deep. That doesn't seem right for a marcher. Shouldn't it be at least 10".

Let's assume it's 9"... can the current rod-support holes be used as the top holes for my j-fest lugs?

Would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks

Jim

Too funny, when I wrote "Would appreciate any thoughts.", I almost added "... but don't try to convince me to leave it alone."

In my mind, a drum like this will see very little use as-is. There are many dismantlers out there who would buy a drum like this just to sell the parts individually. The parts are worth more than my purchase price of $42.

When I'm done, this drum will see plenty of use.

Thanks

Jim

It looks like a six lug and possibly a 13". I have a 10x14 with the original calf heads and it's by far the best sounding ballad snare I've ever heard. The only reason Ryan and I converted the Camco 10x14" tom into a snare drum was because the tom had been used and played as a concert toms for years and the bottom bearing edges were toast..I too think you should leave it all original as it appears to be.

Ahhhh... Of coure i cant use the current holes, since it is a 6 lugger. The marching snare love here is somewhat surprising. Anybody got an 8 lug bare shell to trade?

I see a jazzfest shell with a perfectly centered badge that needs to be drilled for lugs, 8 or ten, strainer application and edges cut. Then black lacquer to finish.

Perfect match for your kit and unless you say so, no-one will know !i

IF, the distance between the top edge and peg hole is greater than 6"

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Well - now. I did not expect to win this 8 lug snare tonight with a low snipe bid. It's obviously got extra holes for the strainer and maybe for the butt plate as well. Looks like this will be my black-nickel snare... because my bid was just high enough. It appears to be nickel and the repaired holes will be impossible to see when I'm done.

Thanks

Jim

Jim I don't know what you paid for the drum, but the Slingerland zoomatic strainer sold will recoup a lot of your purchase price for the drum.
