Help! Vintage Premier Drums

Excited

Hi Everyone,

I'm so happy I found this site. I am a 39 yr. new, married father of two and a drummer from Mississauga, Ontario Canada. I've owned this Premier kit for about 20 years. Believe it or not I haven't really been interested in this kit till now. I've been tinkering with playing and recording instruments in my basement studio. I love vintage sounding drums. I love this kit.

I need someone to give me some background info if they are familiar with this kit and where I can purchase some items that are missing on the kit. I do believe the wood they used for the shells is mahogany. I would appreciate anyone's feedback and wisdom.

The internal mufflers are missing, one of the pics shows the two small holes in the shell where the mufflers would have been. Should I bother trying to find them and re-installing them? I have seen felt used on the floor toms, like they do on the bass drums. I also bought some moon gel for muffling. I also am looking for the long wing nut bolt that holds the tom holder in the bass drum. There is one missing. I also broke one of the tightening screws on the tom holding mount. Instead of a slotted screw driver, I definitely need a premier slotted drum key. lol. What would the original snare have looked like for this kit? Anyone know? Does anyone know where I can source one?

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

Hi Blair,

That's good to know. Thanks. So the kit is probably 1971-72 right? So I need three of the mufflers. I would like to restore this kit back to its original beauty. Do you ship to Canada? Would you ship them in an envelope and send it USPS? Thanks again.

Kevin

One of the Premier experts will chime in regarding when Premier switched from slotted tension rods. Also, do you know if these drums are standard sized or metric? That will also help determine age.

The shells should be mahogany with beech reinforcement rings. The shells are quite thin and they should sound amazing. The color is aquamarine sparkle and is one of my favorites as this was the color of my first kit. Originally the color would have been more blue in appearance. They do typically fade to a green and then worse. The black "liver spots" are also pretty typical and possibly caused by excess humidity. That finish is like a vampire in that it should stay out of direct sunlight at all costs. The chrome used on Premier hardware is pretty exceptional and should clean up nicely. That is a nice kit. $800 is probably about right.
