I wanted to buy this Slingerland kit from Guitar center and the guy there knows nothing about the kit and I don't either. It looks like either a country road or a double time. help?
Can anyone help me? Last viewed: 1 hour ago
If it is indeed a slingerland which it appears to be, it looks to me like a newer one. As we all know, no newer drums are anywhere near the quality of the vintage ones but slingerland is one of... if not THE originator; I would point to the radio king as being a very key pioneering kit...
I would go for it if the price is decent.
can you post a larger pictures and do you have any others of the kit ? It isn't a country time due to the bass drum in your picture has a set o matic tom mount on it, the drums from this time period are the 5 ply shells with no re rings in side the shells, still top quality drums just not as desirable as the 3 ply shells are.
Will GC bargain with you on used drums? Not sure. If so offer $250. Seems like the market is flooded with used drums. Keep us updated..thanks. Nice drums though.
Late 70s to very early 80s classic Slingerland kit. Not new by any stretch. I'm with VM2K, it would be nice to know if it was 3 or 5 ply. Looks like it might be a Blakrome finish. That's a good price. Those concert toms can easily transform to classic toms, if you would want. Neat kit.
Early 80's would most likely have Magnum hardware so it's safe to say 70's. Whether it's 5 ply or 3 ply who cares. $350 is a nice price and if you can talk 'em down 50 bucks or so that's even better. It's hard to tell from the pic but is that an aftermarket mount on 1st tom?

That bass mount is not Magnum. But ... 150s and 160s were still being used in 83. So "late 70s to very early 80s" would be correct.
Who cares about 5ply or 3ply? There is a marked difference in those two builds. It matters to some drummers. It would definitely matter to me. I would think that there are other drummers that would care. Have you played a 5ply and a 3ply Slingerland kit? Have you played a 6ply Ludwig kit? Those things matter greatly.
It would also matter if this kit turned out to be an Artist series (don't believe it is, though), which is why the plies would be important here. ... as would the badges.

The J4 had a 14 X 20 with 8 lugs. This BD is a 10 lug. The whole Spirit line had Pearl style tom mounts. Everything else was Magnum. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Who cares about 5ply or 3ply? There is a marked difference in those two builds. I was saying who cares because the price is pretty good no matter which shells they are. The 5 ply shells are great, too. But hey, if drummerboy6770 doesn't want them based on the shell construction he doesn't have to buy them. Either way it's a good deal.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------It would also matter if this kit turned out to be an Artist series (don't believe it is, though), which is why the plies would be important here. ... as would the badges.

Are the badges any different from any others between 1972 and 1985?

Yes. Rare, but yes.
Slingerland sold bass drums at 18-28 with 14 depth. They also sold 18-26 with 16 depth. You could get whatever you wanted, pretty much. Cats are a BASIC guide. That is why VM2K and I both had requested info beyond the single pic. It would help to refine the info for this gent.
VM2K, it didn't used to be this difficult.
