Hello from Colorado

My names Rick, I'm a Slingerland player and collector. I've been lurking for years, but since I've decided to really start building a bigger collection, I decided to join up. I've got a 680N Slingerland set (14x22, 9x13, [2] 16x16) in original WMP that I salvaged years ago at Sandys in Boulder (now closed) and an Austin-era COF Fibes snare that I treasure (with the chromed metal wrap - boy is that thing heavy). I collect Slingerland snare drums, for the most part, though, and want to acquire more. I'm involved in various music projects, play out a bit (including a TJB tribute band; Nick Ceroli is rolling in his grave) and am a producer for a big band. Hello to one and all!

Hey Rick! Let me be the first to welcome you here. Sounds like you have a nice collection of drums allready. I have a CF Martin era Fibes kit, COF that I picked up for 60.00. I am having trouble getting these drums to sound good. I was lucky enough to come across some Slingy shells last summer and included was a solid maple 1959 Gene Krupa snare. It took a ton of work but eventually I ended up with a sweet Slingerland drum set.

Hey Rick - Welcome to VDF!

A Tijuana Brass cover band! I love it! Is Herb Alpert still alive? I thought the TJB was an awesome band. Those guys single-handedly re-popularized the Big Band at a time when psychedelic music and long hair ruled. My teacher/mentor (by proxy, long story...) Bobby Columby had the same idea when he created, Blood Sweat and Tears, only Bobby went and invented 'fusion' by combining Rock and jazz. Herb accomplished the same minor miracle when the TJB started cranking out hit after hit. I'd love to hear you guys play! Those gigs must be a feel-good blast for you guys. The last band I worked in (Blues band) has a trumpet and tenor sax in the line-up. Playing in that band was a gas. Every time the horns would play, all the little hairs on the back of my neck would stand at attention. Playing with horns (for a drummer,) is about as much fun as making music gets. Big, full sound. From behind the drums, pushing the music from behind, sometimes it felt like I was driving a fully-loaded 18 wheeler down the road at 90 mph! I know you're having fun!

Post some shots of your Slingy's!

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Welcome Rick! What a gas to play TJB! Nick Ceroli was a truly great drummer. Very versatile. I stole a couple of his licks.

Thanks for the warm welcome. The TJB cover band is a lark; we had one abbreviated (half the players didn't show up!) rehearsal and then did a performance during a music fest here in Denver. It went OK (long story!). We are known as the Bordertown Brass and we have a facebook page if interested. Playing that kind of music is first of all, harder than it sounds, and secondly, even harder to get gigs with LOL. I'm basically a swing-style drummer who dabbles in contemporary and bop jazz but just enjoy playing. And yes, Ceroli was a great player and left us too soon. You can sure tell who he listened to growing up ;)

I'll post some pics of the Slingys when I get time. I think I've finally succumbed to the madness known as drum collecting... funny how it sneaks up on you! I just picked up a '69 COB Krupa Sound King with ten lugs that I'm eager to get cleaned up ($112, not a bad deal). Best to all, -Rick

Great to have you. The bonus of collecting Slingerland drums is that, not only are they great but, for whatever reason (and that has been discussed here as naseum) they have a low resale value. That means collecting Slingy's is a cost effective pastime.

As to the TJB the very first song I ever played after bringing my Premier Olympic kit home for Christmas as a sixth grader was "A Taste of Honey". Great stuff and great memories! That album cover was pretty memorable as well. ;-)
