Maybe for sale 1940's Ludwig drumset Last viewed: 6 hours ago

My first post. Trying to navigate the site, very cool. Ok, I have a 1940's something Ludwig set. Even the original carrying case and canvass for the bass. It was my fathers. He was a swing band drummer for years before he went into business, and he bought the set when he was in his teens. Then I used it when I was a teenager in the 60's in the rock band, but was embarrassed because the bass drum was huge and all the mid 60's stuff was much smaller ( and newer)

Long story short, Im now older than dirt, and while moving I came across this vintage kit that has been sitting for decades in storage. Perhaps this post is premature because I haven't even taken it out and looked over the entire set yet.

I did recognize what I thought the color might be in the 40's catalog here. Black and gold, I think.

Some of the pieces need to refurbished, but there is no doubt that it could be brought back to new if I find someone that knows what they are doing.

My question is, how much do you think this set is worth, and would it be better to sell it ( if I decide to) exactly the way it is as opposed to refinishing it?

Thanks.

Welcome Speedo. We'd love to see some pics. Then we can better help you with your questions. But unless you have experience or expertise in rehabbing old drums, I would leave that up to the person you sell them to. Plus some things are better left untouched, just cleaned up and played. More stories of your dad's days as a drummer are also welcome. I love hearing the back stories on things. Shawn

@gutenberg and bigshawn thanks for the advice. Im going to open up the set this week and clean it up. I did notice the bottom of one of the toms is peeling away from the side of the shell. Im not sure what material was used to cover the bottom opening. Im not even sure what the shell's are made from, never gave it a thought in the past. After I clean it up I'll get back on here and upload some pics. The stories that set could tell.

My father was in a swing band called the New Yorkers and they played out and about in the Hudson Valley area of NY state in the 40's and I believe into the early 50's. I remember stories when he was alive, about the good times he had playing out before he was married and opened a successful business. He would sit in and jam with everyone at every function, wedding or party he went to. He had that Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich jazz style and they were his contemporaries and idols. Drumming was a life long passion.

From roundbadgedude

its worth about $350. put it for sale here

! - The snare drum is probably worth that much alone...

Photos please. Sounds like you have nice old DUCO (two-color lacquer paint job) kit from the 40's. Measure the heads on the drums and post the sizes for us. How many drums in the kit? Does it have the matching snare drum?

Photos as soon as you can please. I'd like to see this one myself.

Welcome to VDF!

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I have been really busy at work, but its on my agenda to open the set and really clean it up and look at the specs. It has a matching snare ( I have to double check but if memory serves yes) and two toms that attached to this big ass bass, two cymbals I believe, and a high hat. I'm as jacked to get this thing together as you guys. IF i sell it, it will be the whole set. I was just thinking that I probably should have posted this up in another thread, but just kind of jumped newbie that I am. I remember the sound from this kit being really different then the more modern sets.

BTW roundbadgedude ... your funny. Laughing H
